rahhbekuhh Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 Hey all! Just wondering who else has applied to CSUN for fall 2020? I applied on 11/25 and anxiously check my email every day ?. It’s my top choice and I’m super anxious but I also feel confident in my school and work history. I’ve only ever been employed in social work so I have almost 10 years experience and a degree in psych. anyone else?
Pocketsofh Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Not CSUN, but CSUC. I also check my email everyday! I have been poking around looking for other CSU applicants to gauge when I will hear back. I have 5+ years experience plus a BSW. Sending you good vibes! Hopefully we will hear back by the end of Feb/Early March!
kittybugs Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 I applied for the CSUN mft program. I haven't heard anything back yet. I am expecting that the interview invites will be sent by late january or early february. I'm pretty nervous
rahhbekuhh Posted January 14, 2020 Author Posted January 14, 2020 Ahhh! Glad Im not alone in the anxiety! In stalking last years posts(And a fb group Im on), a lot of people got notified of interviews during this week last year. I submitted my app 11/27 so I’m hoping I hear soon! My poor email inbox can’t take this much refreshing lol
kittybugs Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Sounds like you have a great chance of getting in with your degree and experience. I am pretty young and only have 1 year of experience working in mental health along with a psych BA.
hopefulmft Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 (edited) Hello there, I’m also an MFT applicant at CSUN anxiously anticipating an invitation for an interview, but haven’t heard much yet. I have about 3 years of experience in mental health field and 1 year of research. Graduated with a degree in psych from a UC with good GPA. Wishing everybody good luck and cannot wait to hear from other applicants! Edited January 19, 2020 by hopefulmft
rahhbekuhh Posted January 22, 2020 Author Posted January 22, 2020 Good luck in the MFT! I’m going absolutely insane checking my emails. I just want to know if I have an interview or not ? hopefulmft 1
hopefulmft Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 @rahhbekuhh I know right ? So nerve racking... Let’s hope we will get our interviews invitations soon!
msw/kg Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Hello, I also applied to CSUN MSW program and I would have turn my application early but unfortunately all my references turned in the letter of recommendation late December. I received an email from CSUN that my application was under review. CSUN is my first choice so I'm really nervous but good luck to all.

As far as I know, they don’t start reviewing early applications before the others, so don’t worry about it! As long as you’ve turned your application in on time, it wouldn’t make much of a difference!

Are you applying online or on campus? Hopefully we will both be accepted and future cohort
MSWDUDE19 Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Hello all, I’m currently a CSUN MSW student going into my second semester. I promised myself that if I got accepted to the program that I would give back to this forum in some capacity, as I was in your shoes not so long ago. So if any of you have any grueling questions, please feel free to reach out & I will do my best to answer them as best & as quickly as possible. :) JUM 1

When did you apply, hear about an interview, and hear about acceptance? How was the interview itself?
MSWDUDE19 Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Of course! Graduated from CSUN in 2015 with a BA in Child and Adolescent Development with a minor in Africana Studies. Ended with a 3.8 cumulative GPA and graduated Magna Cum Laude as well. I have worked in day care with toddlers (about one year of experience), after school programs with school-aged children (6 months), severed for AmeriCorps in an education-based non-profit (2 years), volunteered for a 24-hour crisis hotline as a sexual assault advocate (6 months), and recently worked as a behavior interventionist at a charter 6-12 complex (5 months). As you can see, I have been taping into several positions, primarily in educational settings, since I started working in the field post-undergrad. So from what I can remember, I submitted my app I want to say a couple of days before the deadline in the beginning of January and got an invitation via email for the interview on 1/29. I got the acceptance via email on 3/18. The interview is like a total blur for me now. Honestly, I have like blocked that part from this whole experience out of my mind at this point lol. BUT overall it was very chill. I, along with about five others or so that interviewed with me, were overly freaking out over nothing prior to it. It was about an hour and fifteen minutes long (felt shorter) and two faculty members ask the group a series of questions. Probably no more than 5-6 questions, one of them being a scenario in which you have to collaborate with others in an even smaller group (make sure to try to contribute at least once during this part of the interview so that the interviewers see your engagement and how you work with others!) The faculty members then open it up for questions related to the program, profession, anything of that nature. I highly encourage you to come prepared with some questions beforehand. It will only highlight your candidacy even more. The interview closes off with a writing portion. Before you start hyperventilating, remember that this is only one of several factors that the committee will take into account during the decision-making process. From what I can recall, you can either write about your reflections on how the interview went for you or share anything that you did not remember or were able to share during the oral portion of the interview. The prompt is simple and they have you do this during the last few minutes of the interview just to get an idea of your writing skills/style as well. So do not sweat it! Hope this helped! If you have any further questions or need some more clarification in case I did not state it already, let me know!
rahhbekuhh Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 Thanks for your info! I’m going crazy checking my email every day because it seemed last year you all got emails back within January! i have 4.5 years as a Mental health psych tech/crisis line operator and 5 years of case management- 3 in mental health and 2 in homelessness (currently working in homelessness sector now). I got my degree in psych and my cumulative GPA is 3.0 and my last 60 credits is 3.6. I feel pretty confident in my experience but I waver between confident and absolutely feeling not qualified enough yet lol. what are some questions you recommend asking in the interview? hopefulmft 1

Your experience sounds great! I think they will value how diverse your experience is and how devoted you are to the field!

I worry if I’m missing something or if they deem me to be not experienced enough. Also, I feel like it’s challenging to find a paying job in the field of psychology (especially closely related to what you want to do in the future) being limited to only BA. I hope that my work experience being just in the same field is enough rahhbekuhh 1
MSWDUDE19 Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 @rahhbekuhh No problem! And that is totally normal for you to be constantly checking your email. I was on the same boat! I was told by others at the time I was going nuts waiting to refrain from doing that and that if it's meant for me to get into the program then it'll happen. Totally agreed, but it definitely was easier said than done. And give yourself some credit! You are most certainly qualified. Solely going based off of your education and work experience, I feel like you stand a great chance of at least getting invited for an interview. You have ample experience within the field already so do not hold back in sharing your experiences during the interview. That's really what the interviewers want to hear! What lived experiences, personal and/or professional, that has lead you to pursue an MSW. In terms of questions to ask the faculty would really depend on you. You can ask questions that relate to your curiosity about the MSW program such as how the program is structured, what types of social work experience do faculty members have, basic overview of the field internship requirement, or capstone projects that have been done by students in the past. Just to name a few that you may consider! I currently want to pursue school social work so a question that I asked was how to eventually obtain the PPSC, which is the credential I would need to provide services as a school social worker. So asking questions related to your interests or goals that you have set for yourself in the field would be great to ask as well.
rahhbekuhh Posted January 31, 2020 Author Posted January 31, 2020 @MSWDUDE19 thank you! I really appreciate your feedback! Are you enjoying the program? Are you doing 2 or 3 year?
hopefulmft Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I just got an interview invitation :,) Im so anxious and excited :,)
