Hi everyone,

I applied for the Davis Fellowship to study French at the summer intensive language program at the Middlebury Institute in Monterey. The application just closed a few days ago so I was just wondering if anyone else applied for it as well! ?

Hello! I applied and received the Fellowship to continue Mandarin studies! I am so excited. ? I applied for the very early decision - I believe that application was due for me in early December? (I may be wrong)

Hi! Congratulations on your acceptance! Are you attending the Vermont school...? I believe their fellowship application was due early December - I actually wanted to apply to continue Japanese studies but I didn't know about the fellowship until it was too late, but I've always wanted to learn French, so that's exciting! I should be finding out by March 15th if I was selected or not :)

Thank you so much! All the best to you on your application! March is coming soon! ?
Yes, I will be attending the Vermont school. Would Vermont be your same location?

Of course! And thank you very much! I applied for the fellowship for the Monterey Institute since I missed the deadline to apply to Vermont, unfortunately. But my professor taught there and she has nothing but nice things to say about both Vermont and Monterey, so I am excited nonetheless! :)

I have also heard great things about Monterey! Wishing you well as you wait on your final decision! :-D

I applied for Davis Fellowship for Arabic. Do you know if it is competitive?

Hey! From all that I have heard from past Fellows, the fellowship is very, very competitive as Middlebury is an incredible language school to attend in the U.S.

I did CLS last summer, do you think it is equally as competitive. I honestly haven't hear anything about Milddebury or the Davis Fellowship before applying.

What language did you apply for?

That is fair.... I am a CLS Alum as well for 2014. I am unsure which is more competitive. They are different

...but, in my circles, Middlebury is the best school in the US to go to for language study and the talk is that anyone who goes there has phenomenal language skills. Middlebury is definitely incredibly popular in the Chinese language circles. I've been hearing about this school for many years.

I am going there for Mandarin.

It is extremely competitive - if you applied for the Monterey SILP like me, they only choose 10 students total for the fellowship.

You did CLS? I got rejected this summer for CLS Japanese. I studied it for 4 years in high school - the last two at AP level. I wanted to apply for Middlebury for the Japanese school in Vermont after getting rejected but their application for the Davis Fellowship closed in December and I got the news in January. I love learning languages so I was thrilled that I could finally have an opportunity to learn French at the Monterey Institute since their application for the Davis Fellowship was extended to February.

I think Middlebury is more competitive since they give out less awards in general. CLS awards around 550 scholarships which are all divided mostly evenly within each language. Middlebury gives 100 awards for the Vermont School and 10 for Monterey.

I'm sorry to hear that. I would still re-apply next year, your chances will be higher because they love second time applicants.

What do you think Middebury looks for in terms of applicants? I know CLS focused mostly on commitment to the language.

I was pretty bummed about it when I got the news - I have never been to Japan because I couldn't afford it. Also, I'm not sure how true that is since unfortunately I'm on the facebook forum for CLS applicants and I have seen people get rejected 2,3,4 times in a row. I'll still reapply, but being an undergraduate underclassman, not really getting my hopes up. But I will have my GPA going for me this time, haha.

If you're talking about the Davis Fellowship - it was important to note the philosophy of Kathryn Davis, the woman this fellowship is named after. Basically, preparing a mindset for peace instead of war. I think a successful candidate (given the prompt for the fellowship outlined in the application) would be able to link their language studies, their commitment to language in the past and their future career to creating that mindset and helping to build good relationships with people from different communities. I don't have anything regarding French in terms of prior experience so I talked about my past endeavors with Japanese and I highlighted the relationship Japan has with France, as well as what role I thought I could play by speaking both languages, one of which Middlebury would help me begin studying as I don't have access to French classes nearby.

Definitely try for CLS again! ?

Agree with you on what the Davis Fellowship is looking for.

Wondering if we're going to be able to go, guys... the message on the Middlebury Language SChools website went from: "COVID-19 is an evolving situation which we are monitoring closely. At this time, there are no plans to cancel or postpone Summer Sessions for 2020. We continue to accept applications and enrollments. " for the last couple of weeks to today's message: COVID-19 is an evolving situation which we are monitoring closely. We continue to accept applications and enrollments.

Hello - how were you notified of acceptance? I received an email that says "Welcome to the Language School" but doesn't anywhere say "you've been admitted" or "congratulations" or anything like that.
