Fall 2021 Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition/Studies

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I want to have a topic for applied linguistics and SLA folks since I didn't see one for this year. I'm currently doing my Master's in TESOL and I applied to a lot of applied linguistics and SLA programs, since this cycle has been very tough. My area of interest is second language writing and corpus linguistics. Here is my current situation:

Penn State: interviewed and then accepted with full funding and extra scholarship

NAU: interviewed with my POI and one other person and then accepted with full funding

Georgia State: interviewed with 2 POIs I mentioned in my SOP

University of Hawaii Manoa: interview with their committee with my POI presented

SLAT UA: no news

UC Davis: no news (I met with my POI after I submitted my application though), but seeing that they already sent out acceptances, I don't think it's going to work out for me >"<

ASU: no news (one of my friend got in already so I would say it's a no haha)

Georgetown: no news (pretty sure it's a rejection)

Michigan State: rejected

UW Madison Wisconsin: rejected

Congrats on your acceptances. I applied to six universities. I got five rejections, still waiting to hear from UA.

Finger-crossed for you!! I'm currently doing my MA at UA and I must admit that they're a lot slower this year because of funding issues ?

Really? Are you planning to stay there? I see you have great programs like NAU and Penn State.

UA is a great school and I have great experiences with the professors here so I would love to be considered for admission. But we'll see. What is your subfield?

I put both. Just ranked all fields. Linguistic, instructional, and cognitive, social.

You have really good chances. You will have a hard time deciding the school to go to. I bet next week you will get decisions from not less than three schools.

I hope that it works out for you!! I put instructional and socio as my top 2 but my main focus would be instructional. They should be finalizing their decisions soon I think, so finger-crossed for both of us!! :) I hope that this year's cohorts will be similar compared to previous year but we never know... it's a tough year...

Do you have any idea about Ph.D. stipend and the number of students they usually admit?

Last year they admit 6 people I think. The year before that 8 people. And I believe the stipend for PhD student is a bit higher than my stipend as an MA student (I got an assistantship for my MA), so I think around $18k-20k for 10 months (they paid you separately for summer employment).

Thanks for creating this topic. Psyched to see acceptance on Penn state and NAU.
One question. Since you'll start the program holding an M.A. in TESOL, do you have to do full 5 years? How come programs in the UK for example are 3 years...
Did you find any other universities in California or NY that are notable in SLA?

Which professors in UC Davis focus on SLA?

please do update us.  It really inspires me

Thank you for your kind words!

I think if you come in with an MA, you can finish the program in 4 years if you want (funding is still available for the fifth year if you are making progress toward your degree). But I see a lot of people with an MA finishing their PhD after 4 years. Programs in the UK are different from the US since they don't require coursework. So you come in and start working on your dissertation right after. In the US, you have to take coursework.

You can look at education track for some UC schools, they have some focus on SLA. I don't know much about schools in NY, but Buffalo can be something to look into.

For Davis, I contacted Dr. Dana Ferris because I'm interested in second language writing. You might want to look at their website for people that have the same interests as you!

I have been waitlisted at UA. Please wish me luck. Anybody who is considering declining offer at UA, please let the admission committee know ASAP. This is my ONLY option. Thanks.

You still have a chance. Waitlist shows that there is still hope. Fingers-crossed.

Just an update: The department sent me a letter saying that they are trying to figure out funding for me and will notify me if I get offered funding. I will let you know how that goes and it might affect your waitlist status as well!

Hi,

I just received my acceptance with funding from UA. I believe that they have sent out all their acceptances. I'm weighing my options and will notify the admission committee of my decision once I have finalized it. You should ask them about the waitlist movement to make sure if they rank applicants or it's more of an area of interest type of waitlist. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the update. This helps for sure. Please let me know where you ended up going, even if it is UA. Although I may not get off the waitlist, I have learned a lot of things in this admission circle. I hope next time I will prepare a strong application. However, I still have hope that things will work out.

Hi everyone,

I was looking for a post on SLA/Applied Ling and was glad that I found this one! I've decided to go ahead with the PhD (Applied Linguistics) at Georgetown for Fall 2021. I've been out of school for many years (but have been teaching for as long) and this is a big move for me. Also, I was a lit grad and I admire people who studied TESOL and/or linguistics at undergrad.

Anyway, congratulations to everyone here on their acceptances, and all the best to those waiting!

Congratulations Saurus. So PhD. at Georgetown... It's my dream school.

Could you share if you got funding? partial? full fund?
Did you contact any of the preferred faculty at first or straight up applied ?

Congratulations on getting into Georgetown!! You will definitely enjoy your time there! Can I ask who is your POI just out of curiosity and also your research interest as well?
