rab1803 Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 Hi everyone! I'm brand new here. I didn't know this place existed until a few minutes ago. I'm on track to finish my Master's in U.S. History in Spring of 2022. I'd like to go straight into a PhD program that fall, so I'm starting my search for schools. I thought maybe this forum might have some good recommendations for me. Here are my criteria so far: 1.) Must be in the southeast. (This is non negotiable due to child custody arrangements.) 2.) Have a good program in U.S. History. 3.) Be okay with non traditional students, particularly middle aged moms. I'm developing a list on my own of course, but I'm hoping to talk to others who've been down this road before. Thank you!
TagRendar Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 Just for clarification purposes, which states, exactly, are you referring to when you say "southeast"?

Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee. I could also go to Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana, but would rather not!

What period of US history do you want to work on?

I'm currently working primarily on the postbellum South, in the intersection between economics, culture, and women's issues. It's subject to change in my phd program of course, but that's what I'm working on for my thesis. Southern economic history plus women's history are two things I'm really interested in.

I'm not in your field, but the first ones that come to mind are Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt, Emory, University of Virginia, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Florida.

You will also want to conduct your own research. What books or articles have inspired you, and were any of them written by faculty based in the southeast who could advise your dissertation? Also, what are your professional goals? TMP 1

I'll start looking into that. I'm hoping to become a researcher adn writer.
TMP Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 One comes to mind is Michael Cohen at Tulane who has written extensively on Southern Jews and the economy throughout the 19th century. @APwent there for PhD. I know it's a bit far out of your preference but can't hurt to reach out. TagRendar 1
