psychstudent21 Posted November 15, 2021 Posted November 15, 2021 Hi, I am looking for an online community for PsyD students and applicants to PsyD programs. I see that there have been groups established for PhD students and am looking for people with more similar career/professional interests to myself with knowledge specifically for PsyD programs. Thanks! citron-ica 1
PsyDuck90 Posted November 15, 2021 Posted November 15, 2021 These forums are for both and there are applicants and current students in PhD and PsyD programs. There really aren't vast differences between the clinical career paths from either degree. The whole PhD is for academics and PsyD is for clincial work thing is a myth. The majority of clinical and counseling psychology graduates (whether PhD or PsyD) go into clincial practice. Do you have specific questions that you are hoping to get answered? VentureIntoNothingness Posted November 15, 2021 Posted November 15, 2021 I wonder if you want to post this on Student Doctor Network Psychology [Psy.D/Ph.D] forum.
PsyberPsych3311 Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Be warned though, there are a few regular posters on Student Doctor Network that can be very vocal and negative.. sometimes they make good points, but the tone can be pretty discouraging if you're new to the field. I've found that you will find much more negativity about PsyDs on websites like SDN than you will find in real life. But in general, there is a lot of overlap between PhD and PsyD (particularly PsyDs that are university-based, with small cohorts and funding). There might be less emphasis on research productivity in a PsyD, but you'll still do a dissertation and plenty of PsyD students publish or present. You won't necessarily escape research in a PsyD and plenty of (or most) PhDs end up with a clinical focus. Which is good, because research and clinical practice inform one another. Good luck!
