I'm in a similar situation of choosing between a funded PhD and an MA (waitlisted for funding), except with my MA acceptance being from Williams. I guess, the two big questions that I've been considering have been 1) When I'm finished/nearly finished with my MA and applying for a PhD again, would I apply to the school that accepted me for a PhD this round again? (If yes, then is getting the MA worth the time spent if I would consider that school again? For me, probably not) and 2) If I do not get funding for the MA, can I afford to take on more debt? (I've been advised that taking on debt for grad school is "bad," but on the other hand, it would only be two years and might help me land a funded PhD).

There are other questions to consider, of course, but those two factors seem to be the biggest for me.

Really good first point! I never thought of it from that POV...

I just applied for Courtauld funding, so I hope hey'll tell me within the next few weeks. They can't be oblivious of US acceptance/rejection dates.

Am I accepted? Rejected? Waitlisted? I would really like to know. Obsessively checking my email is killing me.

If they have decided "No," then why haven't I received a rejection? But, if they are thinking "Yes," then why haven't I received notification? Am I on the bottom of the pile? Are they rejecting alphabetically? Or by the submission dates of the completed applications?

Why have applicants from some of my programs received offers of admission months ago? Does this mean I'm out? But I haven't heard a "No."

What about phone calls? The interviews people have had? I haven't. Is that bad? Or does it mean nothing?

This is my stream of consciousness right now. I am already obsessive-compulsive. This is not helping.

I noticed that you applied to BU. I just contacted my POI, and he emailed the admissions committee to inquire. Apparently, they are just finishing reviewing apps and are now making decisions. I hoped he would have told me if I was in the 'rejection' pile, because I indicated that I was feeling a bit of pressure from other programs to make a decision.

I'm going crazy as well! I didn't apply to many programs...mainly because I didn't have the time. I just want it to be over. :)

Thank you for the information on Boston. I agree with you in regards to applying to few schools. I couldn't imagine trying to juggle more than maybe 6 applications for the December deadline. Ugh!

Good luck with your admissions! ;)

I heard that UT Austin did not accept any PhD students this year due to funding issues. Someone else close to the source told me that was not necessarily true… there may have been one or two special cases… but they could not confirm anything.

As for Penn. I heard directly from my POI that the 5 accepted students (out of 190 applicants!) were notified in February, right before CAA. The wait list situation depends on the response from those 5 students.

Ren & Islamic

applied: Penn, Harvard

plans: move to Bora Bora and open a convenience store...

That's not good news.

Would anyone who got into Williams offer to speak about some of their credentials when applying to the program? I will totally accept a PM :)

And, the person who received the Dean's Fellowship from the Ohio State University discuss their background? I'd love to hear this! :)

Congrats to all acceptances!! :)

Has anyone heard from Stanford? I was told by my POI that they would be making final decisions at the beginning of March, but I haven't heard anything since mid-February and I am starting to get nervous. I have seen a couple of rejections on the board, but no acceptances.

fortehlulz - I am also curious about Stanford. I received a call in mid-Feb (I assume you did as well and that's what you're referring to?). I can't possibly imagine that they called all applicants? My guess is that I'll expect either a rejection or we're on some sort of unofficial wait list.

Anyone else apply to the PhD at the Courtauld?

Hey there - I applied to a PhD at the Courtauld. I'm not sure I'm willing to go into debt for my PhD though...

Yes, in mid-February my POI contacted me to ask for a second writing sample and it seemed like an informal interview with time to ask questions, etc. I was told that I had made it to the final cut (I don't know how many also made it; could be quite a few. I do not think this necessarily means I made it to even wait-list status), but that they would not be meeting again for final decisions until a couple weeks later. I like to think that my POI would let me know either way since we seem to have a good rapport, but as the days wear on I am going crazy debating whether I should send an email to check. I know the website says that decisions go out by March 15, so I don't want to pester them before then. Also, the lack of acceptances on the board so far is comforting (though with such a small program it could just be that no one who got in uses the board) and makes me hesitant to seem desperate to the school just yet.

Hey there - I applied to a PhD at the Courtauld. I'm not sure I'm willing to go into debt for my PhD though...

Definitely agree with you there. I applied for funding and will only go if I get it majorly. I spoke with my POI in early February (maybe late January?) but haven't heard a peep from anyone there since, was wondering if you'd heard anything/have any info?

To those who applied to the PhD at The Courtauld, do you have MAs???

To those asking about CUNY admits, I was admitted. You login (same site as application, same login/pw as application) and if you got int there should be a green graphic check with a short text is small font at the top of the homepage. Underneath it are your stats (when you submitted, who wrote your recs, etc.) and at the veeerrrrrry bottom are two buttons, basically ACCEPT and DECLINE. Don't press those!!! I almost pressed ACCEPT because I though that was how you get more details. Whew! All available details should be at the very top. Basically, telling you that a letter will come to you in the mail...

For me CUNY, will have to weigh in with a good funding package, which I've hear in the past has notoriously not been the case...

Any Rutgers admits hear about funding/fellowships yet? The MA note on the admissions page is a formality. Technically no one gets accepted into the PhD program (at least not without a MA). You "reapply" internally for the PhD after year 2. My POI who confirmed this said it's explained somewhere on the website.

Cheers!

I'm one of the ones that applied to the PhD at the Courtauld. I have my MA from CUNY Hunter College.

Thanks, SaschaC! I'm definitely on the PhD track but not writing off the Courtauld just yet... Just double checking, since I didn't think you could apply to the PhD there straight from your BA.

I received the funding info in the mail about a week after I saw the website said I had been accepted. It came directly from the Graduate School. If you email the department secretary, she might be able to tell you whether or not you have funding because I know that the department got the funding info for me at the same time I received it.

Did someone just post on the results page that there were 250 applicants for Renaissance/Baroque?! That sounds like a lot. I mean, if there were 250 for that specialization... how many were there total? Someone else here quoted a total amount for UPenn at 190. That seems reasonable... Wow!

Any of the CUNY admits want to speak up? Also, because I can occasionally be a bit of a dum-dum in terms of technology, how/where on the website did you find out you were admitted?

I'm one of the CUNY admits and would be glad to talk about whatever. What would you like to know?

Who can compete with that? It's ridiculous.

I'm one of the CUNY admits too and I'm waiting for the details. I'm wondering about their funding because CUNY seems notorious for lack of funding.

Yep! I posted that. Michael Cole told me that there were 250 applicants in Ren./Baroque to Columbia a phone call. :( Sigh. And he doubted Penn would take ANY Ren./Baroque students this year because he's accepting a permanent position at Columbia and leaving Penn this year.

Does anyone know if they send out a portion of the rejection letters out first ( A to L) and then another batch (M to Z) the next day? My last name starts with Y and I still have not received ANY NEWS from Columbia....

I'm A-L, and I have not heard anything either. Did you apply for a "second choice" / MA? I'm thinking that's why I have not heard yet.
