Hey! I was in the same boat as you last year however someone suggested I look into schools in the states because they have more options. Yesterday I received an accepted at the University of Buffalo with a whopping 3.0 cumulative gpa and no background in CSD! Similarly to you, I have extensive volunteer experience and currently work as a behavior clinician which I believe were the major factors that got me in. Also my letters and references definitely helped, so dont feel discouraged there is hope!!! If you have more questions reach out to me

Hey guys, currently waitlisted at Western and UofT. I’m in the second quadrant for Western. Out of curiosity y’all think I should still have hope or no? I think about this everyday and hope for a call or an email. I’ve heard that you can get off a waitlist as late as august so i don’t know how to feel.

Hey! I’m in your same situation (having been waitlisted and eager to see if it’s beginning to move). In previous threads, there are people who received offers from the waitlist in early June, July, and even late August! I would love to hear from a current Dal student regarding whether they know of any trends related to waitlist movement, but as someone hoping for a chance like you, I would just say don’t feel discouraged yet because many people have declined Dal on this thread for other schools and you really never know!:)

For all the people waiting to hear back from Western's waitlist, I reached out to Janet to ask about the waitlist and she told me that the class is currently now filled. They didn't need many people off the waitlist this year apparently. Disappointing news for sure. She did say that the waitlist would remain open all summer in the case that someone drops out, but it sounds like for the most part the class is already determined.

Did they do a smaller class size this year? I thought it was typically 50 people?

On the same boat here. Waitlisted to McMaster and UofT. Unfortunately, by the sounds of it there was very minimal if not absolutely no movement in waitlists for Ontario schools this year. 

I am at a point were I am just trying to re-group and think of my next steps in terms on strengthening application for next year. It is definitely hard to come to terms that my life is not going to be what I hoped for this September. I am trying to determine if taking extra courses to raise my subGPA from a 3.85 would be worth it for me. I've done the rough calculations and I would be able to raise my subGPA to a 3.88 with a full load in the fall semester. It's honestly a lot of money to take another full semester so I am not sure. Also looking for more volunteer experiences. If anyone has any experience with being waitlisted, reapplying and then getting accepted I would really appreciate any advice.

Hi! Not sure if this will help you, but this is what I did. 

Last year I was rejected from Mcmaster, UofT, McGill and UdeM. This year rejected from McMaster, Western, UofT, but I was accepted to UOttawa. 

To improve my GPA and application in general, I found another volunteer position with SLPs running a PEERS program here in Toronto, and they wrote a reference for me.

I also took classes through Eastern New Mexico University. I actually found out about them through another person in a thread from a previous year. They run a 2nd Bachelor's in Communicative Disorders so the classes would be related on top of being at the undergraduate level so it counts towards subGPA calculations. They are EXTREMELY affordable compared to other US schools (semester was the same as when I was doing undergrad in Toronto, and you can get money from OSAP). It is totally online and totally asynchronous. If you work at it, you can get As no problem, most things are open book. I think I had only 1 proctored exam and I took 6 classes with them. I registered with them right after I was rejected in April, and managed to get in on time to do the summer semester with them, as well as Fall. Might help you if you want to get more classes in before applications at the end of the year. Also really felt like it prepared me much more for what I am about to study, and much better than taking random courses. Some of the courses I did with them I even got to use as prereqs for Western and UOttawa (UofT is kind of strict and only wants general courses not specifically related to SLP which in my mind is weird but ok)

I'm not sure how to reply to the other message about class size but as far as I know, it's still 50 people. It just sounds like they had a lot of people accept their initial offers and didn't need many people off the waitlist.

I understand this fully as I am someone that applied for two years and go rejected from 5 schools, it can be extremely daunting. I recommend maybe apply to UBC, U of A too. I got in this year (year three of applying ) and I got in to to u of a, and definitely what strengthened my application was my volunteer and relevant experiences. I also made sure that my goals and previous experiences aligns with the school's values. My GPA is subpar actually but other factors on my application I made sure it is very good and with good detail of my activities. Some of you may know that several Canadian medical schools have come out with decisions over the past few days, and I’ve seen people speculating about what the time they received a waitlist email says about their relative rank. Would anyone who was waitlisted at Dal be willing to tell me when they received their waitlist email? Reading all of that on Reddit has made me curious lol. I received mine on April 27th at 8:58am EST. TYIA

Hi, congrats on getting accepted! I also was wondering the same thing. I accepted my offer on April 17th through ORPAS and still have not received any confirmation.  Have you heard anything yet?

I was in the same boat! I applied to all Ontario schools right from undergrad and was rejected from them all. I took the Communicative Disorders Assistant program at Georgian College (offered at 3 others colleges too). This program offers a 4 month placement working as a speech assistant. After the program I worked as a CDA/SLTA while retaking  a stats course where my grade was lower. This allowed me to make some money before I start school again. I got accepted to Dalhousie in the first round once I applied again!

Hello, I am just wondering if any SLP students here who finished the S-LP program or already in the program, I am hoping to ask for any help, tips, study advice, and any good strategies to use for studying in grad school. Also, it would be helpful to hear any of your experience about the U of A program and any help or notes, resources that are found online would be beneficial for studying? Thank you very much!

I know this probably isn't the best spot to post my question but I thought id give it a shot since most of the people in this thread have already applied to the SLP program for 2023 (ps good luck😊) 

I (hopefully) plan to apply for the SLP masters program at U of T for fall 2024 and just wanted to ask how the application process is? I'm really nervous since I'm going into my last year of undergrad and my last 10 classes are mostly the prerequisite for the SLP program at u of t. I was just wondering if I score at least a B+ in my final classes do I get a good shot?? my final year has not even started and I've already cried today thinking about getting rejected:/ tbh if I do not get into the program I would not know what to do in terms of careers because I really want to be a SLP:(

(I decided very last minute to get my masters which is why I do not have a lot of the prerequisite done)

- ps I saw that for U of T there's an interview? can someone please let me know how it goes aha I am terrible at interviews also do they test your reading and writing abilities? I get so nervous on the spot I hope they don't take that into consideration

Wondering if anyone who has applied in the past, has taken more courses to try and boost their sGPA? Any suggestions on what school to take them with/how many to take? I'm trying to decide if I should take only a couple. Or if I should take a full semester worth. My sGPA was a 3.78 this round so I am nervous that I could lower it.

Also wondering if anyone has taken pre reqs for certain programs after completing their undergrad. I only applied to Western and Mac this round as I did not have the necessary phonetics course to apply to UofT. I'm wondering if it's worth taking a phonetics course so that I can apply to UofT next round and increase my odds. 

Any advice would be helpful!

Hey! I only applied this round and got in, but I have talked to many, MANY people about what to do if I did not get in. What I would do if I was in your position is take the phonetics course. Your sGPA is quite high already. If you do well in phonetics it should get you to a 3.8; the only school this would be "low" for is Mac, but I think it would still give you a shot.  I would also recommend gaining volunteer experience. This would give you more things to talk about in your SOI and would make your application as a whole look better as it would show you are serious about the field and you know what you're getting into. If you do decide to take more courses, I would do them in the summer (summer courses tend to be easier imo haha), and take easy courses you know you will do well in. Good luck!
