Ok this might be a dumb question, but how do I format my SoP? What should be at the top? Anything? Or do I just start right off with my first paragraph?

If you mean a title - no, you don't need it. You can include a header and write there "Statement of purpose -- Your name" and a footer with "page 1 of 3", etc.

yep, start right away! no title (not even 'Statement of Purpose'), and no name either! (although, name can be included in the header - but i didn't do it)

formatting, i did mine this way:

font - times new roman, 12pt, black

space - single

indent - only the first sentence when you change paragraphs

body - aligned left (DO NOT justify the text)

numbering pages - not recommended if the essay is under 3 pages

because people have different writing styles, you might get varied responses here in the forum

why not justifying text? I feel like documents look bad if they are not justified.

My format:

Times New Roman 12pt, black

space - single (1.0)

indent - none

justify - yes

spacing after paragraphs - 10pt

Header:

Name (Left align) Department (Center) Statement of Purpose (right)

Footer:

Page # (Center)

I too was advised against justifying the text, so did not do that. The same with my writing sample, by the way.
