lewin Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Yeahhhhhhhhhhh, she had NO IDEA who I was. There was my unofficial rejection letter. Besides, she was AWKWARD. #POIfail Oh no, I feel for you. That's awkward. If it makes you feel better, she may have traded many emails with potential students. Suggestion? Next time lead off with "I applied with you for graduate school and we traded some emails. I heard there were interviews already, but I wanted to introduce myself regardless in case we cross paths in the future..." or something. They need that cue. At SPSP this year I introduced myself to a professor with whom I've actually had a phone conversation and I think they didn't recognize my name until I said "My advisor is so-and-so..."
socandwomen Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 yes, I know that u mich sent everything out two wed. ago for "regular" psychology. and the joint program with women's studies sent things out on friday. don't know if it was exhaustive. you should give them a call? I'm new to the forum so sorry if the answer to the question has been stated multiple times... Has anyone heard from the combined Personality/Social Context & Womens Issues at U Michigan??? Thanks!
whoknows Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Hey CWE, I am still waiting on Ohio State too (and Florida State). Who are your POIs? Hey Psychurgh, how did you find out you got admitted into the program for Michigan? I am going to the recruitment weekend for Developmental Psych on the 17th-18th for the interview, but I thought they hadn't sent acceptances yet. Thank you.
Psyburgh Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Hey Psychurgh, how did you find out you got admitted into the program for Michigan? I am going to the recruitment weekend for Developmental Psych on the 17th-18th for the interview, but I thought they hadn't sent acceptances yet. Thank you. Mine was probably different for Michigan since I applied to the Communication Studies department to work under Dr. Emily Falk (and others) who is also in social psych. They have a media psychology program that is within CS. For the CS department, interviews were by phone and I got my acceptance in the mail. I am going up there from the 17th-20th for a welcome weekend. Good luck on your interviews!
HigherEd2013 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Has anyone heard anything from U Denver?
SarahSocPsy Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I heard from my POI at the University of Denver about 3 weeks ago. He told me he was interested in potentially interviewing me, but he had to wait to hear more about funding issues before extending interview invites. He recently informed me that he would not be able to conduct any interviews with students because the department had to prioritize other faculty members who were building their labs due to funding issues.
PocketOfStars Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Hi guys, first-time posting here. So I've been crossing my fingers and hoping that the reason I haven't heard back from so many schools was because the professors were all waiting to discuss applicants at SPSP, but my former psychology adviser went and this was what he told me: . . . the grad students talk about the professors at the conference. The professors talk about the senior faculty. I rarely hear faculty talking about graduate students at the conference, much less prospective graduate students. You just aren't on their radar. 'You are but ants.' Great to know, eh? We are but ants... I've actually been recommended for admission to one of my top choices so I'm not too worried, but I just want a response from the other schools so that I can get some frickin' closure.
Vitaminark Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Which program was that POI from? Just in case one of us has to interact with her at some point, it's good to know. I'll PM you; don't feel comfortable posting it publicly.
Vitaminark Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I'm so sorry, you must be feeling awful about that. Perhaps you can take comfort in knowing that a POI who failed to review your application carefully would likely advise her students in the same manner: with callous disregard. And you're fortunate now to have an idea of what you don't want in an advisor so that you can detect the qualities you do want--warm, amiable advisors with whom you can easily engage in conversation. That honestly was my thought process afterward too. Well, after shaking off the awkward heebie-jeebies.
lafresca Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Just thought I'd let y'all know I just got an informal phone interview invite from my POI at UMass. I can't stand the wait any longer, though. I have gotten 4 informal phone interviews thus far, and have not received one acceptance yet. I know it's still a bit early to hear back (especially from the programs I have applied to), but I'd really like to know of at least one school that has accepted me so I can sleep peacefully. : / Grrrrr........
Mr. Tea Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I haven't seen too many others mention these schools, but in the past couple weeks I've been contacted by professors at UIUC and Indiana U who let me know that I'm on the short lists at those schools.

I rarely hear faculty talking about graduate students at the conference, much less prospective graduate students. You just aren't on their radar. 'You are but ants.' There's research on this: Subordinates spend much time thinking about their superiors, but superiors spend comparatively little time thinking about their subordinates. Students are outcome-dependent on their professors so it's in students' best interest to know as much as possible about the profs. The reverse is not true. ...that being said, I heard a story of an applicant who told three different schools that he was "definitely" going to attend there. The potential advisors knew each other and happened to be discussing incoming students at SPSP. It came out that this student had told all three of them the same thing. They were not pleased. I don't know how the story turned out (i.e., whether he got offers and where he went) but it's not a good impression to make.

My tendency is to express real interest in each program that shows interest in me without making false promises (especially because I want to check out all of the programs before making a decision).
duoduo Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 How's the social psy program in University of Florida? I haven't seen anyone applied to that program here...
HyacinthMacaw Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 How's the social psy program in University of Florida? I haven't seen anyone applied to that program here... I think it's a great program, at least for my specific interests in intergroup relations. I applied even though my POI informed me beforehand that she was unlikely to accept new students during this application cycle. In hindsight I regret that move; I was foolish enough to think that I could somehow slip in. I didn't have outside funding, either. I won't be surprised to be rejected. Best of luck to everyone.
Vitaminark Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Alright, guys, here's some info: I buckled and wrote to ALL of my POIs to inquire about my application status. I hadn't been contacted for any interviews, so I just wanted to be given the unofficial rejections. Purdue - Rejected - POI said to retake the GRE, and continue with my valuable research experience (my score was 1010, and my GPA is 3.86) UC Santa Cruz - Rejected - POI said he wasn't granted a new student for the Fall after all (even though he supposedly was when I wrote to him a few months ago) U of Washington - Rejected - POI said 150+ applicants, unusually strong pool this year, likely due to recession. "We unfortunately could not bring you in for an interview." I believe I've been more than likely rejected by UCLA, UCSB and UNC Chapel Hill since they've already held interviews or sent out invites to recruitment weekends. That leaves me with four other possibilities (not including the Master's programs). Hope this helps! Good luck guys and gals!
Benzene Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 You are brave! I don't think I could do that knowing there could be a huge flood of rejections. Good luck with the rest of them! I hope you have good news.
PsychAnxious Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Hey guys, I decided to contribute from the information that I got so far... I don't have much, but here it is: in NYU 250 applicants for 4 admissions in Purdue - only 3 admissions (I don't know the number of applicants) if you have any information for the status in these universities - or in Yale, CUNY at Buffalo, Minnesota, Rochester - Please let me know... THANKS!
Ms. Coffee Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Has anyone heard any news from Harvard's Social Pscyhology program (advisors: Gilbert and Langer)? Have interviews been requested yet? Any acceptances or rejections? It's my first choice program mainly because of the professors' research interests and I would love to live in Cambridge again...

Yes, unfortunately interviewees have already been notified. My friend (POI=Gilbert) did not hear anything and was told at SPSP that this means she is probably out of the running. Sorry. :/
cerebellumsdayoff Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I really can't contribute much, but from what I know, KU is finished with interviews and is making decisions at the end of this week/early next week.
waiting123 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 How long ago were your applications due? I've only heard from one school so I'm getting pretty nervous/annoyed/tired of waiting. Did your POIs seem upset that your weren't just waiting for the official rejection? Alright, guys, here's some info: I buckled and wrote to ALL of my POIs to inquire about my application status. Ms. Coffee Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Thank you for your reply! Although I'm disappointed, it's better knowing than to wait in limbo. Good luck to you. one eyed rex Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Has anyone heard anything about Chicago, Colorado, Miami of Ohio, or Ohio State social programs?
lewin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 How long ago were your applications due? I've only heard from one school so I'm getting pretty nervous/annoyed/tired of waiting. Did your POIs seem upset that your weren't just waiting for the official rejection? I wouldn't recommend emailing your POI's unless there is specific reason to do so, such as a deadline associated with one offer while you're still waiting to hear back from a school you want more. (Assuaging your anxiety does not fall in this category.) A prof might not be annoyed at a single email, but what if he/she gets 40 emails? That's irritating and unnecessary. They have until April to send offers, so it's best to forget about it until then.
