tatli cocuk Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Hi all, I applied for PhD program to several top schools (about 10) in Electrical Engineering including MIT; and I also applied Materials Science and Engineering Program in MIT, as well. I recently got an admission email from MIT DMSE, but now I am confused as I believe I will be admitted by at least a few top EE programs (though no results from EE programs are announced yet), hopefully from MIT again(who knows ). My BS is in Electrical Engineering and my interests strongly overlap with research of some profs in DMSE-MIT; as well as EE programs. Do you think PhD in DMSE program in MIT would bring as many opportunities as EE programs in top schools provide? And do you think it is a good idea to pursue a PhD in another department? Also, is there a chance to be admitted to EECS in MIT for me; or does my admision to DMSE have negative consequences on that?

I thought they start sending out acceptance letter around mid-Fed... Man, you just make me even more worry and make the waiting time even more painful. Anyway, base on what I have seen in my school (Purdue), many EE and MSE professor's research interests overlap. Lots of EE graduate student starts to work on the material aspect of electronics in grad school and there are also some prof. in my department have EE background. So I guess you will have no problem working with high impact EE research in MSE. The only thing you should worry about is probably the transition from the EE background to MSE. But I guess if you are good enough to apply and got accepted into such prestige school, you should have no problem picking up new knowledges in materials science.

My friend had received the acceptence letter last year at mid-feb, so I was surprised to get the letter on mid jan. this year, as well. Thank you for the answer, MSE in MIT looks suitable to my research interests and looks like a good choice for my graduate study, though I think I will wait for some of EE departments' decisions.
xiaogk07 Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I also received admission from MIT DMSE. Do you know how to get financial aid or have you got financial aid?
nicklo Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) Congratulations to the guys who have received admits from DMSE-MIT! Would you mind sharing with us your academic backgrounds, so we could know where we stand among several applications that have been submitted for this fall? Edited February 3, 2011 by nicklo
tatli cocuk Posted February 5, 2011 Author Posted February 5, 2011 The form of financial aid is not yet clear I think, but dont worry, MIT never leaves its grads broke My stats: 1 published article (not a famous journal) 1 submitted article (a good one) 2 conference papers Bilkent University Major: Electrical Engineering GPA: 3.94/4.00 GRE: V:380/Q:800/AW:4.0 IELTS is waived as language of instruction is English in my college.
nicklo Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Impressive profile... I am still waiting for a response to my application....Since many people have already received admits, I guess my chances are getting dimmer by the day.... Btw, what are your research interestes?
