SFAI - Interview

Phone interview with CCA this afternoon. I'm freakin' out. Someone, PLEASE tell me I shouldn't be nervous! At least it's just on the telephone so they won't see my red face and twitching hands.

Glad to hear it worked out. I agree, if they know already who already, why not just tell us NOW, oh well at least we know when they'll start contacting people.

I called them because I was apparently missing 2 of my 3 letters of recommendation. Fortunately she said it wouldn't affect decisions.

I wish they would go ahead and let everyone know NOW. Quit beating around the bush, guys.

Ooh, please report on the interview. Questions, how scary it was, etc.

so if my present location is a 14 hour flight (plus layover time) away plus a thousand dollar ticket (if lucky) it would be a reasonable ground for a phone/skype interview request?

I think it depends a little on the school, but I know CalArts and SAIC for sure want in person interviews if your in the country. It knocks your chances down a lot if you dont go. I think the more competitive a school is the more it will hurt your chances not to go. I agree that it is silly to almost require people to fly across the country for an interview.

same here.

I am thinking if I dont hear from Northwestern today than I am out for that school... last year they sent our most of the interviedws on the same day : (

Maybe they haven't looked at everyone's yet. I would email or call and ask.....i seems weird that a school would give the option of opting out of slideroom. Some of my schools required slideroom or a CD, and in addition they gave the option of including a url. When is the deadline? They may be reviewing applications as they come. Also, if the deadline just passed recently, there is the possibility that they haven't rounded up your rec. letters or transcripts yet. I called a school worried about that because they said my app was incomplete...and they said they would accept me as on time if they got my materials within 2 weeks of the deadline. This was because they got such a high volume of mail that transcripts and letters could float around for two weeks before being connected with the other materials in your name.

arggggh. i have been talking to cca on phone and email today. when i called, the woman said everything was fine, reviews were still going on, and all my stuff was there.

but when i emailed the grad director i got a response saying that i should have used slideroom, that OTHER grad programs allow u to use a website url, but not this one. they apologized for the confusion, but WTF??? why couldn't they have told me that my portfolio was missing instead of telling me all my app items were there, safe and sound? i'm pissed. CCA interviews are going on today for chrissakes.

in any case, i submitted a slideroom portfolio to them and i'm am sooo hoping that this doesn't hurt my application, though it seems quite obvious that it has.

meanwhile, people are getting interviews from penndesign and northwestern too, so i'm assuming that's bad news for me on those fronts.

i was so hoping that this year wouldn't be like last year, but so far, it is worse.

anyway, thank you guys for advising me on the cca glitch, i'm glad i did something about it!

well, I love your paintings, you have an amazing hand for what you do. No worries someone will LOVE having you!!!!!

thanks! :D i sure hope so

I talked with people at SAIC to straighten out a few things. They said the earliest people should hear is late next week, and the latest is end of March. Totally depends on the department.

You probably already interviewed, but it's OK to be a little nervous!! It can be a good thing! What helps me is to just think, the person on the other end is a human being just like you, they aren't any better than you, and they obviously like your art, and want to hear what you have to say, or else they wouldn't be interviewing u in the first place! Lastly, no one has ever died from nervousness, so think how great you will feel after u get it over with. be strong!

I'm so bummed thatI didnt hear from Northwestern.... I feel pretty sure they would have notified me already if I was to have an interview!!!!!! DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really liked that program and the funding (and Chicago) but oh well on to the next one, right!!! There isnt a rejection email yet so maybe ther is still a chance (that sounds desperate)! Essentially 3 down and 8 more to go!

I just got an email to set up an ID at UC Irvine, which is most likely just so I can check my status once it comes in, but I'm hopeful haha And spoke w someone at UC Riverside, and decisions should be coming out next week.

Not sure if anyone else is even applying to these schools..

yeah i'm bummed about that too, but even more so about not hearing from PennDesign; i thought it looked like it could be a good fit. let's not compleeetely give up on the possibility, but i think u are right to frame it in your head like 3 down 8 to go because last year i was way too hopeful and after waiting months to hear back from schools i was still crushed to get my rejections (it's so cruel of them to have waited so long!). so yeah, 3 down 8 to go for me as well. (or maybe 4 down? i don't know about this cca shit)

i'm applying to UCI! just got the same email. doesn't seem like it meant much besides they got my fafsa info and to set up my id. and there's nothing useful (yet) that i can see in my UCINet account...i can't even find any info on my app or anything...

I'm really bummed about not hearing from PennDesign too, but I wonder if that necessarily means that I'm rejected. They said on their website that they do not interview people, and when I asked them by email, they told me the same thing. Last week they sent an email to every applicant that we can check online for admission decisions on March 14th - didn't mention anything about interviews. I wonder if they changed their admission procedures, or that they just wanted to talk to certain applicants in order to get to know more about them, which will help them make decisions. I know some non-MFA programs do that, but I'm not sure if this is the case. I emailed them again today to ask, and hopefully I'll hear from them tomorrow!!!! I'll post here if they reply. For those of you who did get interviews from PennDeign - are they all phone interviews and did they mention anything about having a final list?

I am so sad about not hearing from Berkeley or Northwestern. I realize they were out of my reach being less than a year out of undergrad and all, but it is still painful.

I have yet to hear a SINGLE word from any schools. Nothing has changed in a month with any of my statuses online.

Oh another weekend approaching where we all just check this forum and anxiously await the new week with possibilities of any clue to our future...

same here about northwestern!!!! : ( but your work is incredible!!! Very cohesive and interesting. I totally thought you were more than a year out of undergrad! their loss. Some people hear stuff on weekends, so you never know. I wish NW would go ahead and post the rejections on the admissions portal so I could feel resolved about it!

@bethanyr

i haven't heard anything from my schools either except for the rejections from yale and umich. keep the hopes up though... like you, i'm only 1 year out of school too, but i feel that shouldn't be a factor in the admission process - it seems that many top school have already admitted or offered interviews to people who are just 1 year out, or even in their last year of college! i guess portfolio is the most important thing, but again, who knows. there are many other silly elements that they take into the admission process other than your portfolio. i'm an international student and i know that umich already has like three MFA students from my country, and they only admit 10 students a year, so that might be a problem too. ugh.. i guess i really don't know...

i've never posted here before, but i've found people's comments and updates very helpful.

i've only heard from Slade: last week (Feb 3) by email - i'm on the shortlist, and only those who can attend an interview in person will do so; no phone or skype interviews (i'm in Canada so i won't be going); otherwise they will review portfolios of those who can't attend again during interview week.

good luck to everyone!

Scolby- Thank you. You are/were totally right.

I was prepared to talk about my work and that's all I needed. *obviously know about the program you're applying to. There were no Yale-type crazy questions... just straight forward. Whew, but I'm glad I'm done, and so happy to have at least gotten this far in their app. process. rolleyes.gif My fingers are still crossed for the next few weeks!

Woao I applied to combined media/new technology :)

I am sure that's a good sign!!

Good luck with your interview and let us know how it goes!
