Has anyone else applied to UIUC? I am most confused by them- I am not sure whether I applied to the MA or PhD program or whether in applying to the PhD program one is automatically considered for the MA program. Either way, I am wondering if anyone knows when one should be hearing from them, or has heard, or knows any insider info to how their MA/Phd situation works.

If you don't have a MA already, you have to apply to the MA program. But once you are at UIUC and earn the MA, you will probably be admitted to the PhD program. This is why people who are admitted with a BA are offered 7 years of funding. Hope that helps!

I have an email that says application decisions will be made in March (although I'm not sure whether MA & PhD decisions will be made at the same time. I'm applying with an MA). This school is quickly rising to the top of my list, so I'm sure there will be plenty of fingernail biting at the end of February!

Ah, well I have just a BA. I did not recieve any email, but I'm assuming the decisions would be make at around the same time.

I see an accept for UIUC.. anyone claim it?

Anyone get rejections yet?

At first I thought that the UIUC acceptance was dubious, but I looked into previous years and it seems that the program does actually still notify acceptances through the postal service. The date reported, I expect, is merely an error, as mail is not delivered on Sunday.

In regards to the MA/PhD situation, I'll add that UIUC doesn't seem to want people who already have MAs from other institutions. I recall reading somewhere on the program website that UIUC strongly prefers its English grad students to do both MA *and* PhD there, and that PhD matriculation is largely internal (from the MA student pool).

Do you think that they notify MAs and PhDs at different times? What do other schools do in regards to that? My guess would be that they make PhD offers first, and then the MA offers. But I don't know what I'm talking about.

Sorry for the lateness of this reply--I just stumbled onto this board and registered etc.... I was one of the accepted posters and I was extremely surprised to hear from UIUC so early! I did get the letter via postal mail, it was slim and I thought they were missing something from my application or was rejected or something awful and was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Speaking with just a little information on the subject, it looks like they accept a couple students in January (I saw another acceptance posted a couple days after mine) in order to nominate them for a Graduate College Fellowship. I am assuming that there will be another round of acceptances that will offer TAships and/or other forms of funding. Unfortunately this is mostly speculation and surmise, though, I am sorry I cannot be more helpful or give you a definitive answer. I wish you all the best of luck and if I learn anything during my correspondences with the department about future offers of admission I will let you know!

About the MA/PhD discussion--I have a MA already and was offered 5 years of funding (they did say that they would offer BA candidates more years of funding). I did see on the website that they prefer to have students get MAs there, so I thought it would count against me when I applied, but apparently you can be admitted with an MA from another institution.

Again, I wish you all the best of luck!

I'm getting so antsy waiting for Illinois. Has anyone heard anything? Judging from previous years results, there should be offers made by now, no?

Agreed. So many schools seem behind this year. . .

Congrats to the recent acceptee! Anyone want to claim/share details?

I received one of the acceptances. There is no information in the letter on the number of those accepted. The funding is 16k for the first year while teaching one class a semester. Then for subsequent years its 19k for teaching two classes a semester with guaranteed seven years of funding. It doesn´t look like there is an official admit weekend but they encourage visitors to come before April 8th.

I was completely resigned to all rejections so this was an amazing surprise.

That's awesome, ahlacruz! Congrats again! :)

I was also pleasantly surprised to find an acceptance from Illinois in my inbox today. I have a thread comparing Urbana to Illinois at Chicago in the "Decisions, Decisions" forum. I would appreciate feedback from people on this board. Thanks.

Does anyone happen to know how Urbana's waitlist works? All I can gather from the results board is that they have some sort of informal system (i.e. they don't notify waitlisted candidates until they have a definitive decision.)

AW MAN :( Do you think that's the end of hope for UIUC? They were my last big school that I'm really into. Do you think that's it for acceptances? Maybe I should contact them about this informal waitlist... Oh man, I thought I had a shot...

I took a trip up there about three weeks ago (not an official visit, only to see a friend) and was told by the secretary that MA announcements would be at the beginning of April. You can imagine my surprise. I hate to think that she might have been speaking of the rejections, and with her privy knowledge pitied me for all my ignorance.

Best of luck to you. I hope the answers come sooner.

What is going on with the MAs at UIUC? Has anyone heard at the master's level?

So I cracked and emailed. I got "Letters were mailed out yesterday, so you should be receiving a letter soon." That's a reject, isn't it?

There was that one lone waitlisted via snail mail results board post. . .

I don't remember whether I posted it on the board or not, but I got a wait-list letter -- it sounded like the department was holding off on sending letters until they heard back from the university about possibly getting more funding for more spots, but they still haven't heard anything, so they went ahead and sent out wait-list letters. I don't know if everyone on the WL got one, or if other letters went out; it was a pretty exasperated letter on their part -- like they were going through with the university what it sounds like many of us have gone through when trying to figure out whether there's any method to the madness in the notification system, or what silence/non-commital responses mean.

Thanks for the insight, margate. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. . . :)
