Oh man I'm getting tense with anticipation and stress! UNLV, NAU, and CSU could notify at ANY moment. There's no reprieve from the anticipation, not after work hours, not the weekend, never!

I'm also kicking myself just a little bit for not putting Canvas proficiency or however you would word it on my resume for applications, as apparently that's what colleges are switching to instead of Blackboard and I live in Canvas with my current job. It's such a small gripe, I'm just finding new things to be neurotic about to pass the time.

Yeah, it was like 1 am Eastern, I think. They had to make sure I saw the rejection. It was painfully short. Btw., I understand they get hundreds of applications, but honestly, they could at least try to be human. I mean, I paid like $90 for my application (international), I think the least they could do is to send a nice email back.

out of curiosity, can i ask what the michener rejection notice looked like? everyone seems to have poor opinions of it

Well, it was just an update of status online at first (from "in review" to "denied"). No fireworks. And then, hours later, there was an email that went like

"Dear XXX:

The University of Texas at Austin has made a decision on your application for graduate admission. Please visit your Application Status Check Page"

And then the link to the status page. So yeah, could have been a bit better.

i feel like everybody is missing the nicer and more extensive message written at the top of the portal . to be fair i didn't notice it at first either but it's there

Not complaining, but sharing some personal data to contribute to the discussion of "work sample quality vs. fit for a program".

My work sample contains 3 poems that appeared in 3 different elite litmags, 1 in a v good one, and several new poems that are as good or better. I don't have any stats on this, but I have to imagine this is toward the "more published" end of the manuscript stacks. My CV as stuff like major workshops, conferences, etc.

I'm currently looking at 2 rejections (from small competitive programs; one school was my alma mater, tho v different department) and 2 pending. My recommenders think the world of me, and have recognizable/revered names.

While I certainly didn't apply anywhere thinking I was owed or even likely to receive acceptance, I do now question statements like, "Work sample is everything," given my record between this cycle and last time I applied (0-6, looking at possible 0-8). Especially when a program beats that drum loudly, such as on their website, in faculty Q&As, etc.

So to folks who are sweating their work sample quality, I say: chiiiillll, it's all subjective, and overall fit for a program is—whether or not they say it—a huge consideration.

To folks who might be overly confident in their work samples: love the confidence, but remember that overall fit is yooge.

TLDR: work sample ain't erthang; fit is real!

I saw discussion of Ole Miss's rounds and whether or not moving past the first round was a good indication of Acceptance/Waitlist.. I was wondering if anyone knew the data for University of Tennessee's first round results? The spreadsheet from last year only has Acceptances/Waitlists for the second round!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ACCEPTANCES AND WAITLISTS! I am so excited for all who get to spend the next few years threshing out the writer in themselves! What a blessing.

Same! What did you apply for? This is my fifth year in a row applying for the prose track; just letting you know you're not alone, and we've got this, together! Praying for success for the both of us! ❤️

Prose (Fiction) as well! I’m hoping the applicant pool wasn’t as large as some of the other programs I applied to (JH, UT Austin)!

I think they tend to have between 200-300 applicants each year, and accept only 4 or 5 in each genre (poetry or prose). It's a tough gig, but there's always hope. :) Good luck to you! (PS I moved out here to Notre Dame/South Bend from my hometown on a leap of faith back after my first application season in 2021, and I can say that the classroom experience (what I've been able to glean thus far (I work at ND full time right now, and am utilizing the employee educational benefit I get as a full-time staff member to take up to 9 credit hours per year for free--I'm taking a language class and a history class relevant to the research for my novel, and LOVING them so, so much) has been stellar, and there's just generally a lot of nice people around here, so you'll be in good hands if you get in. :) I also know a few people from the current cohort, and they're lovely as can be, so we'd both be in good company if we gained admittance! :)

Keep the faith, and don't give up--when it's your time, it'll come! ❤️ God bless you!

THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS!!! I appreciate it. Notre Dame has been the program that has been calling my heart the most. Yes! We are in this togetherrrrrr :)

Some of their professors have published spec fiction so that gives me hope for my samples.

Just a little vent!

This past year I took on two big jobs in my undergrad's CWR department in order to gain more experience and (hopefully) make myself more of a competitive applicant this season. While I'm happy I am so involved in my campus creative writing community and do have an FSU waitlist under my belt, I am terrified of having exhausted myself for no acceptances. I'm aware of how rare it is to be admitted straight out of undergrad and I am SO thankful for the waitlist and the support of my amazing professors— I am just SO in my head. I knew application season would be tough, but I guess there's a difference between knowing and experiencing. Is anyone else dealing with this hopelessness? Wishing luck to everyone here, and I am so proud of everyone for all the hard work we do every day to follow our dreams.

Yeah, from what I've heard, the MFA program tends to be a great place for genre experimentation and interdisciplinary work. (The cross-departmental collaborations are a huge part of the reason I want to attend as well, and they're investing in so many cool initiatives on campus during the next decade of their strategic plan...it's an exciting time to be here! :))

The creative writing program partners with a lot of relevant initiatives on campus--one of my favorites is the Initiative on Race and Resilience, and if I get in, I'm really, really hoping to encourage, partner with, and develop more programming between these two academic powerhouses here on campus!

Hi there, you are not alone! I am too straight out of undergrad (graduated this July) and exhausted myself with applications while working 12-hour days in the fashion industry. I also have 0A/1W/2R/2P so we're in the same boat! The way I try to think of it is that since we're so young, we have still so much to experience of the world to write about, in the future. So even if that means we don't get accepted we can just live another year or too before fully immersing ourselves in the academic lifestyle - which, I expect, will be primarily about writing. Praying the best for you!

Omggggg see that sounds incredible!! 😭 I hopeeeeee I get accepted. The amount of times I’ve prayed for this has been insane! Like I know it’s a program I’d thrive in!

also @pananoprodigy @eternalwhitenights is it possible they would send out poetry and prose interviews on the same day or is it usually separate?

Just posted on the MFA draft spreadsheet for the first time ever! UC Irvine fiction rejection 😢

Oof... Very sorry to hear it.

Has anyone posted acceptances/waitlists for Irvine? I'm guessing I'll be getting my rejection any moment now too. Rejection buddies!

I saw one poetry acceptance posted last week, but nothing for fiction.

I'm waiting for my rejection today from them now :(
