any nc state acceptances here? specifically poets?

I’m waitlisted there for poetry if that helps. My waitlist email said the program had “reached capacity” so I assume all acceptances and waitlists should be out.

is it a fully funded program? (i.e. full tuition coverage + living stipend)? if so, it might be harder to make a case; even if the stipend isn't great compared to the city you're in, they believe it's enough to just get by on

if it's not, you might be able to bring up the situation with the director of the program? but i'm not sure

i've heard people say that it's not really something that's strictly upheld except in certain situations, but i also don't know if it's worth the risk, though i don't have experience obviously

It is fully funded + a stipend. I've heard that it's like an open secret that grad students work, so I'm not sure if it's something worth mentioning or asking about outright. I wonder if it's not a good look to ask about that when it's already stated in the guidebook.

This probably isn't true for all programs - but most have verbiage like that in their handbook. My funded MA program does.

However, literally no one in the department cares if you have another job as long as you maintain a B average, attend class/do your work, and fulfill all the requirements of your assistantship. I know a lot of people who have other jobs.

I mean the reality is most professors were broke grad students at some point too. So a lot of them are going to understand. But I don't think anyone in my program asked for permission.

Ah, okay, thank you!! I figured it wouldn't matter as long as all of the duties were being fulfilled and grades weren't slipping, but I'm a naturally anxious person lol. Wondered if someone in the program heard info of some student working another job the student would get a warning about it or something, but from what I'm gathering it's just an unspoken thing that students are gonna probably get an outside job at some point.

Corroborating with something someone at Vanderbilt told me: that while the program says MFAs shouldn't have outside employment, the stipend doesn't reasonably cover living expenses in Nashville, so the unspoken reality is that they'll grudgingly allow you to keep a job as long as you show up to 100% of program responsibilities. Miss one thing tho, and it's likely to be unpleasantly addressed. I got a "better to ask forgiveness than permission" vibe around extra-program employment.

Ah, okay! Thanks so much @exvat and @honeytreasures!!

Fellow waitlister for NC State Poetry. I'm really hoping that I get moved up from the waitlist. (I did email them to let them know of my continued interest in their program.) I would be over the moon to work with their poetry faculty for multiple reasons. Plus it is the one place left in my potential list of schools that my kids' dad could transfer his work (we are currently in Utah)... So...

Please universe, please please please! ❤️

Yep... I applied in fiction, I think my uncertainty is gonna hold a little longer, which is really scary.

same here 🫠 at least we have SOME whisperings from them now, the radio silence across genres has been brutal

For people who are the same sick as me but actually on a computer, was Brown poetry same day as fiction last year?

having obsessively checked the data over the month, I’m pretty sure they were often notified on different days

They were notified about two days apart, last year. Poetry came first.
