Hey everyone! It’s my first time applying for an MFA in fiction— I’ll be done with with undergrad in May.

I was recently waitlisted at FSU (yay!) and had a Zoom with Mark Winegardner, the director of the program. He validated my writing which was incredible to experience and also explained FSU does not usually accept students fresh out of undergrad. Apparently, most schools like to accept applicants with life experience and diversified interests and careers. He was really honest and I appreciated the sentiments he made. I was most likely waitlisted due to my internships and experience with administrative work in the writing program at my college.

Is anyone else applying out of undergrad/ applied before? The call both boosted my confidence and also made me fearful of how other schools I applied to will perceive me because of my age (22). My writing professors warned me that I will not likely receive any offers due to my age.

I’m hopeful and terrified at the same time. Is anyone else feeling similar? Thank you for reading!  Good luck everyone :)

Hi! I am also applying straight out of undergrad and feel similarly… But so many admission committees constantly reinforce that the writing sample is the most important, so I am hoping mine is strong enough plus i think string LORs help if adcoms are hesitant about someone coming straight out of undergrad. where all did u apply? n best of luck!

Sorry if this is an old question - does anyone know if Iowa, UVA, NYU, or Michigan do interviews before they release their results? I have an interview with a UK school next week for their Creative Writing MSt, but haven't heard back from any USA schools yet.

Iowa doesn't, and Michigan hasn't historically. UVA however does do interviews now before finalizing results. (And I can't speak for NYU since it's not one of the schools I know about!)

Omg hello it's nice to hear I'm not alone! I applied to Wyoming, FSU, Arizona State, Iowa (for giggles), John Hopkins, North Carolina State, and Syracuse! What about you?

First off, just got a KU denial. Oh well. 0a/0w/2r/2 soft rejections/15P.

And, I'm a year out of undergrad (graduated in May 2024)! I'm 23. I feel your pain, but you already have a fantastic start with FSU's waitlist, so you should be extremely proud!

did anyone at all hear about the acceptance for fiction by Hopkins? It looks like they gave out waitlist notification only. Or am I trying to keep my heart?

Expand

all the draft notifications (poetry and fiction) are waitlists, I'm surprised not one person of both genres put an acceptance in.

what if theyre doing it backwards this year.... (probably not but I'm still trying to remain positive LOLLL)

shouldn't we have heard of at least one acceptance? In 2023, Hopkins did something similar, gave out waitlist notifications. I was here on the forum, not sure if the acceptances were received first

Last year acceptances came first, followed by waitlists about a day or two later.

Is it possible they would release waitlists before acceptances? That seems kinda strange.
