lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 So . . .I'm seriously planning on calling this afternoon and asking if my file is complete. I'm now thinking that something happened and it's not even being reviewed. Are there still a lot of people waiting to hear back? If so, maybe I shouldn't call. . .
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 You're probably right. Sigh I don't understand why it is taking so long. If there's time to give people feedback on their applications, shouldn't that mean decisions have already been made?
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Glad to know that at least I'm not alone anxiously checking my Duke Apply Yourself page. I had a nightmare last night that I got back this 20+ page PDF from Duke in which they ripped apart my SOP and writing sample and said I was unbelievably stupid on all counts. Somehow there was a prof there (probably Maureen Quilligan since she's who I want to work with) laughing at me the whole, inscrutiatingly long, awful process. They said it took this long to hear only because my application was so awful they wanted to personally destroy it Hope you hear good news soon! Hope all of us waiting do!
RockDenali Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 If your last name starts with the latter end of the alphabet, I'd suggest not calling. (I haven't heard, either.) Because Duke sent about 483290432 emails about receiving application materials, you would probably know if your file was incomplete. My last name starts with "L" and, like I said, I still have heard nothing. So, unless they are very, very slow, I think we are beyond the name-order stage. But who the hell knows? I just asked a prof and she said a long wait after the first round of acceptances and rejections means waitlisted or waitlisted for funding . . .
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I'd be thrilled with a waitlist at this point. I HATE waiting!!!!
RockDenali Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Bah. Spoke too soon. See, this is why you don't speculate . . . ! Rejected via form email. Oh well, it was expected. My background is rhet/comp, and all my lit apps were written from that angle. Mostly applied out of curiosity, to see if literature and rhetoric aren't compatible after all . . . . Good luck to the rest of you!!! Oh, and stats just for those of you still wondering: 720 Verbal 560 Quant 5.5 Analytic BA and MA from top-10 Western regional univs (USNWR) 3 national conferences 6 publications, including a short story alongside David Foster Wallace, published post-death But again, rhet/comp guy, not lit guy.
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 RockDenali, congrats on the programs you got into and best of luck on remaining apps. So. . .have you climbed Denali/hale from AK? I climbed Kilimanjaro last year and definitely have Denali on the list
RockDenali Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 RockDenali, congrats on the programs you got into and best of luck on remaining apps. So. . .have you climbed Denali/hale from AK? I climbed Kilimanjaro last year and definitely have Denali on the list Nice job on the Kilimanjaro ascent! No, I have not climbed Denali. I'm from Los Angeles. It's going down this summer, though! Climbed Shasta and Hood two summers ago. Climbed the east face of Whitney last summer. All in preparation for this Alaska trip. Always nice to meet a fellow climber. I've met several through my academic studies. Something about climbing and research must go hand-in-hand . . . Good luck on your apps! Still hope for you for Duke . . . . But remember, you don't need 10 acceptances, just 1! And, of course, just remember that many Duke PhDs now work alongside PhDs from . . . well, you get the idea
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Nice! I'm sure you'll have an awesome time climbing Denali this summer! I'm jealous of that trip Since Kili was so pricey, we're staying closer to home and going to climb Granite Peak in MT this summer. It isn't the highest point (obviously) in the lower 48, but it has some technical bits and is really beautiful. Thanks for the words of encouragement. Duke area doesn't have a lot of mountains (at least by Western standards) either, so I'd be really happy staying in the NW somewhere. Things will work out okay for all of us, I'm sure.
Glossed Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I applied to Duke's Literature program and assume that I will not be accepted since I did not receive an invite for an interview.
wanderlust07 Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 *Raises hand in the back row* I'm still waiting (not very hopefully)...
swilson Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 *Raises hand in the back row* I'm still waiting (not very hopefully)... I'm waiting too! I'm at the point where I don't even care whether it's an acceptance or rejection, though I've had wet dreams about working with David Aers and Sarah Beckwith for months. I just want to know something. I think I'm starting to sound like a broken record on these threads . . . and in real life.
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 (edited) Hmm, Swilson, appears you and I are in direct competition then Best of luck to you! Edited to add that I am SO ready for the waiting to be over as well. UGH! Edited February 8, 2011 by lyonessrampant

Edited to add that I am SO ready for the waiting to be over as well. UGH! Good luck to you as well! What's your concentration? (I'm assuming medieval, so, within the period.)
cquin Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I applied to Duke's Literature program and assume that I will not be accepted since I did not receive an invite for an interview. Same here. But maybe it means we'll be waitlisted? Waitlisted with funding?? I can dream...
cyriac Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 No one asked, I know, but I do seventeenth-century!
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I'm actually primarily an early modernist, so I guess we're not directly in competition, which is a good thing! Female mystics and hagiography of the late medieval period is my secondary interest. However, a lot of the approaches Beckwith in particular uses I've found helpful in framing my own work. Let's just hope this all gets answered soon. This seems like such an odd way to notify, no? A bunch of rejections, some acceptances, some more rejections, a bunch of unknowns?
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Interesting we're all sort of close together regarding interests. . I wonder if they're notifying by subfields?
cyriac Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 (edited) Interesting we're all sort of close together regarding interests. . I wonder if they're notifying by subfields? You know, that's a sensible supposition. I bet three quarters of the applications are for 19th and 20th C. I work on alphabets and Milton and the phenomenology of blindness. Might've been better to have applied to the Lit. program. Edited February 8, 2011 by cyriac
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Well, I sure do hope they get to us soon!
blackshirt Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Same here. But maybe it means we'll be waitlisted? Waitlisted with funding?? I can dream... Dreaming the same dream, as I also applied to Literature. But wouldn't they invite us to the interview weekend if we were waitlisted? I am going to assume rejection, I think...
AurantiacaStella Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 They are not notifying by sub-field because I'm also a medievalist with very similar interests to both of you, swilson and lyonessrampant. I received the rejection letter last Wednesday (Feb. 2), so I have no idea in what order they are sending out these decisions. Best of luck to both of you, though! I would have loved to work with Sarah Beckwith, especially. Also, swilson, I am so so so jealous of your Northwestern admit. Ah, Barbara Newman ...
lyonessrampant Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Passionatevariety, sorry to hear about the rejection. Best of luck on other schools you are waiting on!
swilson Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 If it's just a rejection, I still wonder why it's taking so long. It's not like they really personalize them.
