Has anyone used this service before? I signed up for it and have found one good match, but I was a little creeped out when I had a guy send me a message saying he has a room and commenting on how I looked. Gah, makes me feel gross just thinking about it.

How are you going to go about finding a roommate if you are looking for one?

Check out the website of the university you're going to go to--particularly the housing & residence life section. My current roommate and I met through a roommate search service that the University sponsors, and while I thought maybe that was something unique to my school, I've been able to find similar services on the websites of other schools I've been considering. Some of them are quite good and let you post a pretty extensive profile. My roommate and I have lived together almost 2 years now and we get along very well.

If this fails, look up the campus newspaper online and see if there are any non-university sponsored websites that lots of students use. Oftentimes there will be other outside sites that will have roommate searches for your particular school as well.

As a last resort, you could always ask some graduate students in your new program for help.

Oh, also... you could google for roommate sites that surround a specific interest or habit you have. I know there's a site called veggieroommate.com for vegetarians/vegans who want to find roommates, etc. I haven't used these kinds of sites before but for some reason I'd feel a little more comfortable using something like that than roommates.com... maybe just because I'd already know I'd have at least something in common with them. They probably attract a narrower crowd, though.

I'm going to be in your shoes very soon looking for a roomie somewhere new too... let me know if you come across anything especially promising!

I found one entry that was interesting. It's a house with two older male grad students, and I'd get my own bedroom and bathroom. I have an older brother, so I am comfortable living with guys so long as they aren't creepy. But it's in a good family-type neighborhood, so there will be no noisey drunk people at all hours of the morning. He wanted about $100 more than I wanted to spend, but he said he's willing to negotiate if it meant getting a good roommate.

Wait, meridionale. Which school did you decide on?

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I was thinking UNC. However, I just got an email from IU offering me financial help, so back to being confused again.

UGA is out of the running? Sad!

UGA is out of the running? Sad!

Well, I doubt UGA will give me money. Locura got tuition+stipend today, but she inquired when she got acceptance and was told she had been nominated. I emailed, and they told me that they will notify us all soon. I think UNC will offer me something (or I hope), so I don't know. I guess that is my phrase of the day - I don't know.

I know that UGA is still deciding on Graduate School assistantships and such. They said I should hear by the middle of March, which is rapidly approaching.

i used roommates.com before...and what i found was older (not OLD, but older than my husband and i) people who wanted more of a connection than just roommates. like a big happy family. all we wanted was someone to rent our room and hopefully not bother us too much.

that said, don't let one creep dissuade you from the other possibility you found there, unless they're the same person.

i'd recommend craigslist's roommates section. it's free. and the tips the person before me posted.

Thanks grad cafe,

About three weeks ago, I was searching for an available room somewhere in Boston, and I had been searching for months (to put it in perspective.. I've been searching for a place to live since December). I spent most of my time on craigslist as I was determined to find someone renting off a room for a year's lease, but I either found roommates who were too impersonal or roommates who were just downright weird.

As I was casually surfing this forum, I came across this thread. I went onto roommates.com, and thought, "Oh what the hell.. it is only $10, and I really do need a place to live and people to live with." Within days, my account was put into use, and I found a great apartment (spacious and cheap!) with great people who I'm excited to live with.

And to think.. this all happened accidentally.

If you haven't found a place yet...you may want to try the grad student list server at UNC. I found my roomate my first year of my MS program through it and had no problems. I just posted a little bit about myself, that I prefered to live in Carrboro and found two great possibilities in less than 2 weeks!

There is the website...hope you find it useful...or any other prospective for UNC-CH!
