DeathBeforeDecaf Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Anyone else hear back from American this week? Sound off!
kleisthenes Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Anyone else hear back from American this week? Sound off! Still waiting to hear. I did submit my application on the deadline, though (1st Feb). I'm unsure how their award system works. They are already asking for my financial information before my application is assessed for admittance. None of the other schools have requested that, even now that I've been admitted. I know I'll need to provide it at a later date. Is my financial form (as an international student) tied to tuition and fellowship awards? I've started receiving open scholarship information from them too. Something is up.... (And LSE's tracking system has stopped tracking my application). To say I'm tense at the moment is an understatement.
jb08 Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I heard from American earlier this week and got the official acceptance in the mail today. That letter said "Decisions regarding the initial round of merit awards are made in mid to late February and students selected for an award will receive notification by letter and email starting in March." Still waiting to hear. I did submit my application on the deadline, though (1st Feb). I'm unsure how their award system works. Application_Overwhelmed Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I got an email from American last night to just check my online status. I thought that would be bad news, but it wasn't. I'm officially in! I'm surprised I heard back so soon because I applied on the Feb. 1st deadline. Now waiting to hear about funding...
tj19 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Yep, same here. e-mail to check my status, which did not sound promising, but then was pleasantly surprised. Not very optimistic about $$ given my stats, but who knows?

Application_Overwhelmed Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Would any of you mind sharing stats??? What are your stats, weissenlf?
jb08 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Would any of you mind sharing stats??? Program Applied To(MPA, MPP, IR, etc.): MPP and some MPA Schools Applied To: U Chicago Harris, U Michigan Ford, IU SPEA, Carnegie Mellon Heinz, GWU Trachtenberg, NYU Wagner, American SPA Schools Admitted To: None yet Schools Rejected From: None yet Still Waiting: all of the above Undergraduate institution: Jesuit University in Midwest Undergraduate GPA: 3.65 Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): 3.75 Undergraduate Major: Political Science GRE Quantitative Score: 780 (89%) GRE Verbal Score: 570 (80%) - this may be the lowest I've seen on these boards this year, I'm hoping my Quant and AW scores will help offset this a little? GRE AW Score: 5.0 Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 2 Years of Work Experience: 2 Describe Relevant Work Experience: 2 years Americorps and very recently began working in a low-level position at a nonprofit related to the field I want to study Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): I think it's strong. My passion about the field is clear, I think I have some trouble distinguishing why I want to study at particular schools/programs Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): My recommendations from supervisors will be strong. I worry that my academic recommendations wont be stellar only b/c I didn't form relationships with professors during undergrad. My recommenders don't know me very well aside from reading my Statement and knowing I did well in their classes. I'm also concerned b/c I have practically no Quant bakground. I took a Stats class as a freshman and did very well but never took any other math or econ b/c it wasn't required. I did okay on Quant GRE, but I doubt that will be enough to make up for my lack of coursework.

DeathBeforeDecaf Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 P.S. Does American's religious affiliation have a big impact on campus life? Or it is just nominal? Anyone have some insider info on this? Thanks!
jellyfish89 Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I was informed the acceptance by American U on Jan.21 and received the application package one week next. It said on the admission letter that students who receive merit based awards will be notified by the end of February/early March. Is there anyone could tell me the advantages and disadvantages of AU compared with other MPP programs?
canesfan2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I applied for the MA in political comm through the SPA but I haven't heard back yet... anyone else? I've already been accepted everywhere else, but I'm curious what happened to my application! It still says under review and I applied Nov. 26...

I've already been accepted everywhere else, but I'm curious what happened to my application! It still says under review and I applied Nov. 26... I would e-mail. My app was complete Jan 13 and was accepted Feb 22. Have you received any news since this post? It seems like we applied to similar programs. I'm still waiting to hear back from GW for Media and Public Affairs. Congrats on your other acceptances!

kleisthenes Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I spoke too soon, lol. Just got the acceptance email this morning! Congratulations to those who have been accepted to AU SPA so far! For those who have received responses from AU, how are they issuing awards? Is this sent with the email response or later? And is it judged by a separate scholarship essay? I can't hack this waiting!
canesfan2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I just got a notification that my decision was available on the app site. No word about funding, but I'll be REALLY confused if I don't get any because my stats are wayyyy above their median and I attended their for a semester doing "study abroad." I'll let you guys know! fingerscrossedfrgradschool Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 (edited) Their letter said that they'll be making fellowship decisions in March-- early- mid march (and they continue making decisions after their April 16 deadline).
