UTgradst Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I had 5 articles published and two under review. you had really a good CV then. How couldn't you get it? were all the papers from your PhD? Are you an Engineering student?
stanxv Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I had 3 published papers and one in review and I still got rejected for the PGS-D.
UTgradst Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 you had really a good CV then. How couldn't you get it? were all the papers from your PhD? Are you an Engineering student? you know, I've heard it depends also on the school. Every school has a percentage of the whole awards given annually. Of course, it is more competitive at good schools.
UTgradst Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I had 3 published papers and one in review and I still got rejected for the PGS-D. wired. Let 's see what happens to one of my labmates. he has no journal paper published, only 2 or 3 conference proceedings. I'll let you know. World is unfair generally!
UTgradst Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 who knows whether mails arrive in Toronto earlier or London?!
ogopo Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Just got the email from the awards guy in our department. No NSERC for me. Apparently there will be a second round of awards offered in May but I'm not holding my breath. Good luck to everyone else!!
cathome Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I have 7 journals, 8 conference all in 1st author. IRDF really means nothing, impossible to find a company.

UTgradst Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 communications you know I really don't understand NSERC (REAL) criteria. Last year they sent my application to the MATH committee, while I'm a student in Industrial Engineering!!
expat_canuck Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Has anybody also applied for a Banting postoc fellowhip?
SOONA Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 By the way, may I ask your name, mine is Mehran Hassan...from Egypt originally
UTgradst Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 One thing that I do not have doubt about is Community Involvement, for which I was very involved through committee chairing, and volunteering many things..I have been really involved in extra-curric... but this hasn't been stated clearly in their criteria. They have clear wights for research and communication. by the way, I didn't PDF, just pre-approved for IRDF!
UTgradst Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 one very clear criterion to me also is "being a canadian citizenship". NOT a permanent resident. Scholar, if you don't mind are u a citizen or permanent?

Yes, I do agree with you. It feels like to me NSERC is seeking potential leaders in academia and rather than pure good researcher.
newuser Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I got NSERC PGS without any journal publications. I had two conference proceedings from masters.
newuser Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 By the way, I also had plenty of extra curricular.
Scholar Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I am permanent resident.. By the way UTGrad..do not worry, maybe after 2 years I start looking for an industry job, not finding an academic one...
usercu Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 (edited) FYI this year the total number of PDF awarded was 131 (past years over 200 and last year 286)...Budget cuts they claimed... Received the IRDF (pre-approved). Edited March 22, 2011 by usercu

UTgradst Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 anyway, as I mentined I don't know how they select people for the award. I have a really good CV compared to other people in my area, but still didn't get it. the whole process is disappoiting anyway!

forum_name_2 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Is it possible to know more information about a PDF "meritorious" rejection? like for instance, the ranking to at least know more or less the chances of getting the fellowship in may?

I am not sure but I think the only way you can know your exact ranking is to ask for details concerning your evaluation (in june) and you shall receive it in june or july (so after may anyway). I think "meritorious rejection" means that you almost got it but there might be between 5 or 50++ persons before you and only NSERC knows that (until june or july). Edited March 22, 2011 by grady
