pinot noir Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) So, I received a phone call on Friday from the head of the creative writing department at UCR expressing that they had read my application with 'great interest' and would like to speak with me 'as soon as possible.' We've played phone tag since and it's leading me to wonder what does a phone call mean anyway? It's not really my top choice, but still, I'm curious... any help would be appreciated! I just had this experience, and it was an Accept. I doubt they would be pursuing you to reject you...I would take it as a good sign. *crossed fingers*

eklavya Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 phone calls are usually for interview-y chat to gauge you and your interest in the prof's research. like diber said above, it mostly leads to acceptance. even though this is not your top choice, play cool and be nice... it's always safe to have a fallback option. good luck!

pinot noir Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 Thank You! I'm expecting a call today... a little nervous, but excited too. 'twas an easy call, "we'd like to offer you admission for fall '11." And that was it!

oiseauaudio Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Congratulations!! Newms, hope yours went well too!!
kotov Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I had one of these and was told by the professor today that he and his colleagues were impressed by my application and that the hoped I'd be recommended for admission/funding at the vote next week. So. Yeah. I'd say it's generally a good thing, though I don't know that him saying that necessarily means I'll get in. I'd hate to get my hopes up just to get crushed and find that there were 8 people more impressive than me.
newms Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) Congratulations!! Newms, hope yours went well too!! Thanks. Mine went well - it was basically an informal notification of acceptance. I got the email saying I'd been recommended for admission the next day. Edited February 19, 2011 by newms

Hope they do recommended you - I'm guessing that the odds are in your favor, since you have a prof who wants you. I don't think that they'd bother to call if it weren't likely that you'd get admitted. Fingers crossed.
