tortola23 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I've lived in Austin for the past six months, and applied to UT for this fall. I just got a letter asking me to send a fax from my employer to verify that I've been employed in Texas for the past six months (which I have) in order to claim residency, since that will make me a resident as of fall 2011. The letter also mentioned contacting "your financial aid officer" to see "how your financial aid package will be affected." Does this mean anything? Has anyone else applied to an in-state school and received something similar? I don't want to get my hopes up if they do this for everyone who claims residency in their app, because I definitely haven't been officially admitted yet. What do you guys think? This is so nerve-wracking!

This is so nerve-wracking! I live in Texas, and have for the past two years. I applied to UT and have yet to receive anything from them like what you're describing. So... maybe that's a good sign for you - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! EDIT: I'm stupid! I'm already a resident, so my situation doesn't apply! Sorry!!! Edited February 15, 2011 by crutch
truckbasket Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Yeah, I just got something like that from a UC. Trying not to read anything into it!
tortola23 Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 I asked them by phone and they said, "Residency is a completely different classification", whatever that means. I don't see why they'd bother to verify it if it wasn't going to matter to them, but who knows, it's all so convoluted and they don't really tell you anything. ARGH!
truckbasket Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I don't see why they'd bother to verify it if it wasn't going to matter to them And this is why trying not to read into it is virtually impossible! I was even issued a student ID# and asked to log onto some site to check a box so that "my package could be forwarded to the Dean's office." I hope I never have to go through this process ever again.
tortola23 Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 Me too. I don't know if I could handle doing this a third freaking time. Good luck, guys.
gradgirlwannabe Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Me too. I don't know if I could handle doing this a third freaking time. Good luck, guys. Tortola, did you apply to MA programs the first time, or only PhD? I'm assuming you applied to both this year?

lyonessrampant Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I'd guess that they split up residents and nonresidents since the funding packages would be different. I would also guess that they have to verify residency before any offers of admission or anything. I hope it is a good sign for you!
