Congrats to the ASU acceptances!

I've also applied to their PhD in English, but in the rhetoric, comp, linguistics concentration. I'm assuming they notify separately, but that's the one place that hasn't communicated an approximate notification timeframe to me, so I was curious.

I'll add my congrats, too. If you're doing Early Modern/Renaissance and get a chance to work with David Hawkes, he is an incredible professor and scholar! You're really lucky...

No word for me. I'm going to be optimistic and assume that this is because they have a big program and notify applicants in waves?

Ah, well. A brand new bottle of burgundy is waiting for me tonight.

I just received my ASU acceptance tonight via email. Anyone else here received an acceptance? I'm wondering if anyone has actually heard from the English department; I only received a very short, generic letter from graduate admissions...

What is your field? Lit or rhet/comp?

Lit - specifically 18th-century British lit.

Rejected--I wasn't exactly a great fit for ASU. I just creeped on My ASU and saw the posting. Good luck to anyone still in limbo!

I just received my acceptance letter from ASU a few minutes ago. I'm interested in late medieval religious literature. I also received a generic letter from the Graduate College. Hopefully we will hear about funding soon! Does anyone know how well ASU typically funds their English Lit PhDs?

Congratulations! I think the stipend is about 15k on a 1-1 load. (less if you don't have an MA)

I'm still waiting to hear anything, and I've decided that they must notify rhet/comp separately than lit people.

I just randomly logged into my.asu.edu to find that my status had changed from "in review" to "Congratulations!" So....check your statuses, comp rhet people!

I got in! I stalked the ASU page and then all the sudden, a few minutes ago, CONGRATULATIONS! I'm so pleased! Congrats to everyone else!

Hooray! That was such a nice surprise to see that. I was checking that page frequently today. An e-mail followed a few minutes later. I just e-mailed the department to say I was looking forward to hearing about funding.

Just got my acceptance email too! This has been one hell of a day! This morning, I got into Brandeis' Joint English and WGS MA, and now tonight I'm in at ASU. Tomorrow cannot compete with today!

was that you saying "holy balls" on the results board? Congratulations. I wonder when we'll hear something from the department? That's the one place where I was never in touch with anyone in the department office. Or any faculty, come to think of it.

yeah, the "holy balls" was me. Succinct descriptions are my specialty. Yeah, I was never in contact with anyone from ASU, so your guess is as good as mine when it comes to when we'll get more info.

Anyone hear anything about funding? I'm thinking of emailing the department and asking, but I don't want to bother them if someone else already has. Congrats to all acceptances!

I sent an e-mail to the generic department e-mail address listed on our acceptance letter-- got an automated reply back:

"Thank you for your interest in English<http://english.clas.asu.edu/> graduate studies at Arizona State University.<http://www.asu.edu/> Due to the high volume of emails, please allow at least five business days for a response."

So....no word yet.

Thanks Chris83. Hopefully we'll here something soon. Best of luck to everyone

I received an email last week from the graduate secretary. It stated that funding would come in the form of a $15k stipend, which was part of a TAship, plus an additional $3k from a graduate fellowship. It also stated that tuition and fees were covered.

Has anyone else who applied to ASU's rhetoric and comp program not heard anything yet? I've been checking my online status repeatedly, but it still says "in review." I'm assuming rejection at this point...

Congrats on your acceptances crutch. did the email mention when they would send out funding offers?

I heard back from the graduate coordinator, and it sounds like if you didn't already receive a notification like crutch received, then you're wait-listed for funding.

I was told I'd hear something in a few weeks.

And congrats on that fellowship, crutch!

After researching the ASU website (FAQ), I found this information:

When will decisions about teaching assistantships or funding be made?

Decisions about teaching assistantships are usually made in March. The department will call, e-mail, or send an official offer letter via U.S. mail.

If I do not hear from the English Department by April 15, does that mean I will not be offered a teaching assistantship?

No. ASU is a member of the Council of Graduate Schools. Students who are offered financial support (T.A.) have until April 15 to make their decision. We cannot make additional T.A. offers until outstanding offers have been declined.

Perhaps crutch is an ideal candidate and was thus given preference, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the rest of us have already been relegated to the T.A. waitlist. March is still a few days away - I haven't given up hope yet!

Thanks for tracking that down! I should clarify that I called it a wait-list because the e-mail I received said specifically "Currently there is a waiting list

for the TA positions." The e-mail gave me the impression that it wasn't a typical wait-list situation, though, and that matches up with what you found on the website.

Chris, you certainly know better than I do, since you contacted the dept. directly. I'm just trying to look on the bright side! Are you going into Lit. or Rhetoric? I noticed that crutch has been admitted to Lit., and I wonder if that makes any difference. At any rate, many congrats to you and to all who've been accepted!!!

I scrolled through the forums from last year, and I think it seems as if those of us who were admitted in Feb. are probably the first round, because in 2010 many people didn't receive notification until March.

An open question to all of the other lucky admits wondering about funding: do you have teaching experience? I do, but I'm not sure how helpful that is. Ugh, waiting is so painful!
