How important is this visit?

I received an e-mail from the graduate director of Applied Sciences at the College of William of Mary replying to my inquiry of a visit to the campus/program during my spring break.

His reply:

A visit is often an excellent idea, since one of the most important

factors in admission is a match between the interests of the student

and potential faculty mentor(s). We've begun to make our admissions

decisions, with that process extending out over the next three to five

weeks or so.

So I am thinking it is pretty essential that I visit this program. Opinions?

He's right. A visit is REALLY important. Do it. You don't want to commit you next few years to a place you've never been.

Absolutely! Not only will they get to know you better ( a face to an application name does wonders), but you will able to decide if it is a fit for you. Definitely go if you can.

Are visits essential for all PhD applicants? It seems like it would be difficult to manage for people who applied to a bunch of programs. I did not visit anywhere, and now I am even more worried about rejections.

No, visits aren't necessary for applicants, but they are essential to those who are admitted. It's fine to spread a wide net when applying, but when narrowing schools down to a final decision to attend, then these visits often help sway someone to their choice.
