SIPA (Columbia) Thread

I'm wondering though...if people are in and being considered for scholarship, can't they just inform them and say that financial info is to follow? That's what SAIS, GW, and HKS seem to do...

You'd think so but I guess their process is different. Since they do state that funding for first years is pretty limited, maybe they create a separate pool of applicants who they think ought to receive funding. Then, after they've made the rest of the decisions, sit down and determine the funding allocations, then notify those recipients of the admissions decision and funding all at once.

Okay I just called... when I asked specifically about today, she said ummm yeah... we will be rolling the decisions out. I asked until what date and she said 2-3 weeks.

Oh that's nice

I'm sympathetic to the fact that it is a large program with a lot of applicants and so they're probably very busy, but couldn't they just say April 1st or April 7th and release all decisions at the same time, thus sparing us this headache? Or perhaps they feel pressure to start releasing decisions, given how many of the other comparable programs already have.

I think you're right, HDPFDan, for whatever reason it takes them a couple of weeks longer than other schools, but they don't want to lose people who get caught up in the excitement of a SAIS, HKS, WWS, etc. offer of admission, possibly with funding. So, like any good seller, they keep you on the hook for as long as possible. I don't blame them for it either, but I'm going to talk to somebody about whether I can sue the SIPA ad com for the ulcer I am most certainly contracting right now waiting for my SIPA decision.

What I should have asked is what is the deadline for those who got in to officially accept? And do they have a admit day? I know Harvard's is April 1st... not that I'm going to that one, :^/

Like several others, I received my acceptance from SIPA yesterday morning. I believe they said their deadline for accepting or rejecting their offer was May 1. That being said, they have an open house in early April, so I'd expect decisions to be delivered to everyone prior to that date, so that anyone who has not heard, but will be accepted, could attend.

Congratulations!! Are you going to go to SIPA now that you got in?! Thank you for the info... I hope to be at the open house, if they let me:) do you know what date it is in April?

Update: I just called their office as well. They said all decisions have been made, but they have to verify all the letters and check for accuracy etc. They will be rolling out decisions today and in the next few days. If we have not heard back in a week, we should call their office.

I got accepted yesterday as well. I am so sorry to those who are still waiting. The SIPA admitted students day is April 10, so you will know for sure before then. (Those were suppose to be words of encouragement but I know it doesn't help, at all. Sorry...)

Thanks!! That gave me SOME relief and you're clearly more skilled at asking direct questions... or the person who answered the phone was a lot more helpful :)

Accoridng to the decision letter, Admit Day is on April 10 and deposits of $1,000 are required by 5/1.

Yes, a $1,000 deposit. If that's not a commentary on the demographic they expect to attend the school, i don't know what is!

Right and a plane flight to NYC, while missing work!

Reading this far sent shivers up my spine. Thought it meant it's all over, just reject buttons to be clicked.

Dude... language is a potent weapon. Use discretion out of solidarity for the faint-hearted
