Turned 25 this year. Planning on applying to an MFA program end of next year 2012 when I'm 26....so I should be in a program at 27... Is there an average age for MFA students??? I will be done with my art education by 30....sounds somewhat strange to say.

Age doesn't really matter for academics, and it shouldn't matter in general, but the fact is that it matters a lot for social interactions. The younger you are, on average, the more university will be at the center of your life socially. The bigger the age gap, the more varying of experiences and social expectations and the harder it is to form really close relationships (either romantic or platonic). People who are older might feel excluded if their cohort is mostly young, but then they're also more likely (though not necessarily) to have other family and friendship commitments (though if they move for grad school, this might not be the case and might pose a real problem for them). So I do think its important to think about...

27. I was actually having reservations about applying to grad school b/c I felt too old.

Very funny. I hardly even remember being 27. I'll turn 52 shortly after accepting at one of the schools I'm applying to. It's never too late to pursue your dreams. I've raised six kids and had two other long term careers before returning to study art by getting a BFA in photography. Will I be discriminated against by some schools due to age? Likely at some. However, some schools may also appreciate the artistic maturity that comes with age and the potentially improved ability to mentor undergrads. My current BFA professor (who is 10 years my junior) told me I shouldn't worry about my age. He said that maturity is very beneficial to an artist and that it shows favorably in my work.

27-29 is average for MFAers. I agree with you Fool4nine I don't think age will hurt as long as your work is good.
