spinnergal Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I applied for an NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant so that I can hopefully go into the field and do my dissertation research next year. Is anyone else waiting for this one? Anyone know anything about the notification process, timeline or whatever? Anyone else want to commiserate about how anxious waiting for funding makes us?
rising_star Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 The timeline varies since each division has a different deadline. Email the NSF Program Officer and ask when the panel review is. That's when they go over and rank all the proposals that the reviewers have read individually. Decisions won't come out until after that 2-3 day session.
rotifera Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 My advisor got a rejection notice for my DDIG last week, although they didn't bother to email me. However, I'm a Biology major, so the Anthropology section may not have met yet.
jjo202 Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 I applied for anthro and got rejected in the last round (Aug 15), and I'm still waiting to hear back on this one. Last time I was notified about this long after the deadline (although a few friends got responses trickling in for a few weeks after that), so if they're on a similar schedule it should be any day now ... And, yes, this waiting is absolutely miserable.
sara84 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 I know of one person who received a rejection email for the anthropology NSF DDRIG yesterday. I'm still waiting to hear back from them! mstevens7 Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I heard from my advisor that the Federal budgetary negotiations have affected the NSF, and that some funding has been cut. Apparently this will affect this round of decisions (maybe cutting 1-3 grants given per program). It also means that the final decisions will take a bit longer because they now have to work with a different budget. However, this is all secondhand info, so contact your program admin for the real deal. (I am waiting to hear about cultural anth).
Mooshel Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I applied to Law and Social Sciences DDRIG (January 15th deadline) Anyone heard anything back from this NSF division?
GringaTica Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 A friend just got a rejection email from Cult. Anth. Fingers crossed for those still waiting to hear!
pinaybub Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I'm still waiting to hear back (cultural anthropology). Spoke with my Program Officer and was told I would receive word within the next couple of weeks... A friend just got a rejection email from Cult. Anth. Fingers crossed for those still waiting to hear!
ananthropologist Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I hear some folks received offers today for the cultural anthropology ddig. It seems most people haven't heard yet though. Any ideas for what to expect in terms of notifications from here on...?

Any ideas for what to expect in terms of notifications from here on...? Yeah I wonder what the process is exactly... I know that they separate the recommended proposals into 'High priority', 'medium priority' and 'low priority', so maybe they send out the offers to the high priority people first, and then based on how many turn down the grant, send them out to lower priority proposals? I haven't heard yet either, so I hope that this isn't the case!!!
pinaybub Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Yeah, I haven't received any word yet (either via snail mail or email). I keep checking my Fast Lane account, too. Wishing you all the best! Binzer Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Hey, I have been lurking on this forum for weeks checking for updates. I am waiting for Cultural Anthropology and here is what I know. They are holding 3 rounds of panels and have been sending letters out after each. The first panel was at the end of March (someone I know was notified (negatively) afterwards. The second panel was mid-April, I had a friend notified (negatively) after that. The third panel has happened/ is happening soon? I thought they would wait until they did all the panels to start notifying people with awards but it seems like maybe that is happening now from your posts about people hearing positive news. Last year I heard in mid-May so it should definitely be in the next couple of weeks. I hate waiting!

Does anyone know what review date was listed in fastlane for the people who have heard yes?
pinaybub Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Hi everyone, fyi- My external review date is listed as March 28 (cult anthr) and I have not heard a response. Thanks for the info, Binzer. Does anyone know what review date was listed in fastlane for the people who have heard yes?

Hi all - thanks for all the helpful info. I'm still waiting as well! Pinaybub - did you happen to apply to a second section? Last round a friend of mine got her response a few weeks after the cult anthro panel and I have been wondering if her response was delayed because she was also reviewed by science and society...

pinaybub Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 I received an email from my NSF Program Officer yesterday, informing me that I am being recommended for funding. Good luck everyone! Nope, no second section!

ananthropologist Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 I received an email from my NSF Program Officer yesterday, informing me that I am being recommended for funding. Good luck everyone! Congratulations pinaybub! Do you mean you received an email informally notifying you that you had been recommended, or was this the official word (with reviewers' comments and the like)?
pinaybub Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Official word with reviewer comments. Although the Program Officer's recommendations are usually followed his recommendations are reviewed by another committee before the final go-around. But I must submit IRB approval, budget changes, and an abstract (which NSF will edit) re: my project for, I assume, posting on the NSF website. Pending these submissions and the final okay from the committee that follows the Program Officer recommendations, it sounds like a go. At the end of the email, however, my Officer wrote Congrats re: your award. So I feel positive but am still keeping my fingers crossed! And the Program Officer said that I won't received a formal award until 8 weeks from receipt of my materials. Congratulations pinaybub! Good luck getting all the materials together.
