revivalarch Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Good afternoon all! Has anyone made a decision on where they are going for their art history MA/PhD and why? I was struggling with the NRC rankings for awhile, as I was trying to discern whether or not I should select the program with better ratings. However, many advised me that it's best to go with a program where it's a better fit, where there will be great opportunities for me to thrive, etc. In any case, anybody accept any offers? My regards! Edited March 21, 2011 by revivalarch
Herbie Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Nooooooot yet. Edit* If I don't receive any sort of funding, I might as well consider myself rejected. Edited March 21, 2011 by Tired
Manette Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Deciding between: UVA, Rutgers, staying in NYC to work at my current gallery job/reapplying next year... I'm happy to have a choice at all, but I do feel like I'll have regrets or doubts no matter what I choose.

What are the disadvantages/advantages? I was in a similar boat. I was offered a year full-time visiting instructor position...or I could accept admissions to UW-Madison or UIowa. Hmmm...

It looks like you're still waiting on some programs...might funding be available and you just haven't heard? Or, does it look pretty bleak at this point?
Herbie Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Each acceptance came with a funding TBD. I'm fairly certain I won't get anything at all from BU - unless I get a fellowship (haha), tuition isn't waived . . . annnd incurring costs from the sheer high rent there, plus paying the tuition, etc.? The last one is a public institution, and I feel like if I haven't heard anything by now for funding after being accepted late Jan, I won't hear anything now. It's just depressing. Here's hoping that someone doesn't want to pursue a Ph.D there and it free up some money? In this case, I would have had to make a decision by then anyway, right? Apr 15?
amleta Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I'll be starting my post-masters PhD at Boston University this fall. I'm in the (very!) fortunate position of being able to work full-time and do the program part-time if funding doesn't work out.
MinorGirl Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I will accept the offer at OU: graduate teaching assistant stipend (even if it's 30% less than what I make now as a M.A. student!) and tuition waived. The only aspect I didn't count on was higher rent...

revivalarch Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 I decided to accept admissions/funding from the University of Iowa. I will be working with Barbara Mooney and Robert Bork (and a few others) studying revival architecture in 19th/20th-century Europe and America and minoring in Medieval art/architecture. My MA focus is Medieval art/architecture, and I have a strong background in 19th/20th century architecture...I have a broad range of interests, so this program and the faculty are a great fit! I was accepted to other programs (some with funding), but this was the best fit! I'm very excited to begin! mooncake88 1
Herbie Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I think it is a great time to bump this thread. 14 more days. Oh man. ):

I don't want to formally accept until I know all the details.
summertouch Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I am going to formally accept to UPitt in the next day or two. YAY! Mind sharing your concentration? I'm waitlisted at Pitt and I heard there's only one or two positions for people in contemporary so if you happen to be one of bunch of us contemporary people, I'd know I can finally move on! Congrats to your admit! I love their new system of having separate clusters.
Herbie Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Have they let you know about funding yet? I don't want to formally accept until I know all the details. Yes, I was notified about my funding situation in e-mail on 3/31. I was told the official notification is going out on Tuesday via snail mail (not sure about other applicants), as even my official admission offer still said "financial aid package pending."
