waddle Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 So I've noticed that some CVs make the distinction between invited presentations and presentations. What is the difference? If the organizers of a session at a conference invite you to give a talk, that's termed "invited". Otherwise, if you submitted an abstract of your proposed talk and it was accepted for presentation at the conference, then that's just a regular presentation. From what I've seen at science conferences, invited speakers are usually professors who are well established in their field; the other speakers are usually junior faculty or postdocs.
rising_star Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Invited presentations are often colloquiums or seminars given at the request of a department.
lewin Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Exactly what the above posters said. An invited talk at a conference really prestigious because it means the organizers want you to be there. I'd add a third type of invited talk: Sometimes people list their job talks as invited talks, though sometimes this is frowned upon. It's not as prestigious as invited conference talks or invited deparmental talks anyway.
