True, I saw that someone was already told they were an alternate. But it's also true a couple other people have received acceptance notifications from people at IIE.

What I meant was more along the lines of there being two sets of 'alternates' - one that they really reaaaally want to give the grant to and are waiting for confirmation of funding or to see if an accepted person declines the grant, and one that they want to give the grant to (since of course IIE recommended them) but that it's unlikely they will be able to accept them because of the limitations on the program, if that makes sense. I'm just speculating though.

EDIT: a couple people now have said something along the lines of "you'll get an acceptance from FSB and a rejection/alternate from IIE" - I'm wondering where that opinion comes from?

Pretty sure that opinion comes from the recommended email we got back in January. Pulled it up on my email, it said "If you are selected for an award, you will receive notification of your status from the FSB. If you are named an alternate or are not selected, you will be notified by IIE." So, there ya go!

In the status update E-mail letting us know we are finalists: "If you are selected for an award, you will receive notification of your status from the FSB. If you are named an alternate or are not selected, you will be notified by IIE."

Wow. Congrats to those who found out today. I fully anticipate another month of waiting (Taiwan - ETA), but reading the last few pages of this board was intense. I don't know that my heart or monthly budget for adult beverages will survive into late April.

Is anyone else waiting to find out about the Boren fellowship as well? Stress from waiting for one life-changing email is bad enough, but stress from two is worse! We are finding out (unofficially) for that as well this week - I'm not sure my nerves can take much more of the ups and downs, did I or didn't I stuff! Eeeek!!!

Best of luck with the Boren! That's a really interesting program. What country did you apply to?

I think it'd be odd for Germany ETA rejection and alternate letters to go out on a different day that acceptances, but it's 6 o'clock on the East Coast and still nothing in my inbox. Anyone else in the same boat?

I thought it might be helpful if I paste the text of the email I received (It was from Theresa Granza) What I gathered is that they're informing me now so that I can move on with my life and make other plans, so maybe they're still deliberating about some applicants, and that's why they didn't send out everything--just the non-acceptances?

I am an alternate, so ever-hopeful, and crossing my fingers for Austria.

Dear Blankity Blank Blank,

We are keenly aware of the pressure on candidates to make their plans for the coming year. Therefore, we want you to know the status of your candidacy for a Fulbright award for 2012-2013 to Germany. You have been designated as an alternate for the U.S. Student Fulbright Program. Thus you would receive an award only in the event someone withdraws or additional funding becomes available. It is our hope that you would be available to accept a grant should it be offered at a later date. In the meantime, it is important that you advise us immediately if there is any factor that could preclude your accepting the award.

The majority of principal candidates are given one month to make their decisions regarding acceptance or declination of an award. You can assume that the principal candidates for your country are being notified simultaneously with this notice to you. Therefore, you can estimate the time frame in which most students will accept or decline their award offers. Please note, however, that there are grantees each year who accept the Fulbright award initially but, due to unforeseen circumstances, need to decline the award later on. In addition, every year additional funding becomes available in the late spring. Your chance of hearing from us will be greatest in May and June and steadily decline as the months go on. For that reason, you will remain on the alternate list through the summer and into the academic year unless you withdraw, in writing, from the competition.

No additional information should be sent to us in support of your application, as it will have no effect on your status. Also, please be advised that in the event that we can offer you a Fulbright award, we will try to contact you by telephone or email first. If you need to update any of your contact information, please let us know in writing. You will receive no further correspondence on your status unless you are offered an award.

We appreciate your interest in the Fulbright Program.

Sincerely,

Theresa Granza

Director, U.S. Student Programs

But the email we got notifying us as finalists was at like 6:30pm I think......so it makes me think there might still be hope today!?

I say we reject Fulbright and form our own scholarship, only for the rejected. We'll call it "Rejectbright". It will be open only to those who have received a no in their lives.

Btw, lKjl, you might be in luck if people have made dual applications for Austria and Fulbright... its rare that there is a double scholarship like that.

I'm waiting on Austria, but I'm not very hopeful. It was not a top quality application but I am hoping that perhaps Fulbright will siphon off some and allow some space for the Fulbright rejected.

I'm all for the Rejectbright, let's do it. I'm sure there are some former Fulbright rejectees out there who have made it big and could fund it.

I hope you're right about Austria and that they'll give me a bit more consideration. I put a decent amount of effort into the Austria application, but it wasn't my first priority in the way Germany was, so it probably could have been better. Good luck to you, too!

I also think it would be quite odd. In that alternate E-mail it says "You can assume that the principal candidates for your country are being notified simultaneously with this notice to you." So I am assuming we may still find out today. I didn't receive my finalist E-mail until 7:40pm, but some of my friends heard around noon. This will continue to drive me insane until I find out.

Hi, I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but I thought I'd share: the email came in this morning, I'm an alternate for Germany ETA. Better luck to those still waiting to hear back!

Long time lurker finally subscribing. I am playing the waiting game, as well. I have applied for and been selected as a finalist for the Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange. We were told "end of March". I'm glad that there are others as anxious as I am. It is nice to know that there are others opening each incoming e-mail message with a mix of excitement and dread. Good luck to all of you! Reading about your ETA notifications has helped to calm my nerves.

I wonder which non-Western European country will be notified first...

Haven't Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil already found out....?

Question for Full Grant applicants -- just curious, did any of you reach out to your host institutions to notify them that you made it to the final round?

Yes. My host organization has been super helpful and supportive. My husband and I spend my last student refund check on tickets to visit the village we will (??please??) be in. We worked for a week at the organization and fell in love with the pueblo and the people there. We cannot wait to go back- the kids have been asking about it a lot lately, too. They are excited to meet the kids I'll be working with (positive thinking!).

Also, I was told by a former professor today that, if I am approved, he has five really nice cameras to donate to my project!!! Come on, Costa Rica- five, count 'em, FIVE fancy new cameras. That's enough to push me into approval territory, right?

Hi everyone..long time lurker, first time poster:-)

I am a finalist to the Netherlands.

I just had the nerve to call Rachel Holskin at IIE and she confirmed that we won't be notified until mid to late April. I was on the website of the Netherland America Foundation yesterday and I got butterflies in my stomach when I read that notifications will be done in March. However, another part of that same website said mid-April. I figured that it was best to check for sure as I didn't want to sprain my thumb by hitting the email re-load button on my phone ten thousand times in the next few days:-) Congrats to everyone who has been accepted and my heart goes out to those who have received unfortunate news. For the rest of us, best of luck in retaining your sanity. Not knowing is really killing me!

wow, so this is telling me that it is probably worth it to call! I guess calling her isn't going to affect the outcome at this point, eh?
