HyacinthMacaw Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Hey folks, Just wondering if anyone else has been using Google+ and how they have fared managing professional and personal online profiles simultaneously. Does a Google+ account obviate academia.edu/Linkedin? I'm thinking of opening an account on academia.edu, but I would love to hear your thoughts first. Thanks very much! Also, if anyone would like to be invited to Google+, please feel free to PM me. I think the service is a delight, at least as a social network for personal use. I'm still leery of using it professionally. I will gladly send you an invitation as long as you are OK with disclosing your email address. (You could also anonymize your email address if you would like.) More broadly, please feel free to share about your experience on Google+ on this thread. All the best! singlecell 1
Agradatudent Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Never even heard of academia.edu... should I know about it?
TheSquirrel Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Never heard of academia.edu either. Just checked it out, and it requires that you put your full name to sign up, and I'm hesitant to put my name on any such online communications/social networking system without at least first seeing an online demo or something.
hejduk Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I've got all the social networks setup (Twitter, etc), and man is it a PITA to keep them all up!! Academia.edu is useful in that it's all academics in one place. Cool to list your research topics, and then have potential contacts recommended based on your research topics. You can ask questions and fellow members can answer the question you've posted. My Academia.edu page is, at this point, just an extension of LinkedIn for me: i post the same news articles from LinkedIn onto Academia.edu. I've made some good contacts on Academia.edu, and it's a good resource, but then again it's yet another thing to keep up. Google+ has great potential. I can't see it replacing any other social network (ie. LinkedIn, Academia.org) until it's made open to the public, and it has the membership that the other networks have. Great start so far though.
Behavioral Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I would love Google+ to be as spartan as academia.edu and LinkedIn. The problem with FB and a lot of the other social networking sites is they get way too cluttered with gimmicky things. Already, I'm seeing the same people who spam things on FB/Tumblr do the same on Google+; at least I can put them in a different circle and never hear of them again.

It's a good site for looking for and maintaining academic contacts. I've been using it for some time - it is nice. Good thing is that you can list (and even upload) your articles there and when somebody (ad comm) googles your names the first thing they will see will most probably be your Academia.edu page. And it does look professional. Also, it showes you who has opened your page there by Googling it (it shows key words used, the country and time when the search was made).
Henry Hudson Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I like academia.edu, but it's not universal enough to a point I'd be on it regularly. haven't heard much about Google+ yet, but my patience with FB is wearing thin.
singlecell Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I am excited to try Google+. I adore google products. By the way, Academia.edu has a nice feature. When someone googles me and clicks on my academia.edu profile, I get an email with the details of their search. It is nice to know when people are searching for you!
qbtacoma Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 I feel awkward about making an Academia.edu profile. I will wait until I get to grad school, even if I don't do anything noteworthy for a while!

InquilineKea Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 (edited) For those who have used Academia.edu, what field did you find it useful? Do you mostly use it to talk with professors, or with grad students too? It seems that it's still mostly barren for most academic departments. Very few professors seem to use Google+ so far - I mostly just use it to interact with science bloggers and other academics who are really involved with the Internet (but that's a very small minority of them) Edited July 30, 2011 by InquilineKea
