crazedandinfused Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 (edited) Well, kids, I just got a wonderful belated Christmas surprise: an email from my POI at one of my dream schools. I am being nominated for a fellowship. I will post details after I speak with the professor and have more information. Talk about a surprise. I was just checking my email while making a late dinner and I dropped my phone... Wishing everyone else all the best and lots of luck! Wow! That's great news and a very auspicious beginning. Many congratulations. I want similar news!!! (I quit smoking as a new years resolution, and the double anxiety of nicotine-withdrawal and application-suspense is driving me nuts....) goldielocks Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Thanks, crazedandconfused. I hope you get good news, too. And congrats on quitting the smoking habit. I imagine that must be difficult. I talk to my POI tonight. I'm excited but very nervous. I really didn't expect to be considered at this school, so I'm just a bit overwhelmed. Hopefully it will all go well, and then I can share some good news (and more details, of course) with all of you. How's everyone else holding up? I had managed to forget about most of my apps until this happened. Happy New Year! Safferz 1
Safferz Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Good luck, sending you positive vibes -- I'm sure your POI will have great news to report! I'm holding up well, and it's only just starting to hit me that it's January and decisions start rolling out soon. I don't expect to hear from any of my schools until February, so I feel pretty relaxed right now and glad I'm not still working on applications
goldielocks Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Safferz, I still have one last app to send out. I am so ready to be done. I can't believe it's already January, either. I was looking at the results page and some of the programs I'm applying to were making offers as early as the first week of February last year (including the one I've been posting about). It really just flew by.
TMP Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Congratulations. I have a pretty good guess at which school it is. Remember, nothing until it's in writing! But chances are, you're one of the program's top choices. I'm surprised that the decisions are being made already at this point.
goldielocks Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 Thanks tmp. I am definitely not getting my hopes up until I actually have an offer. I spoke with the POI tonight and it was unbelievable. I am still in disbelief that they want me. Like many of us, I have second-guessed and agonized and exhausted myself in scrutinizing my desirability as a doctoral candidate. And here I am, with this possibility in front of me that I never expected. Only time will tell what is going to happen, but I hope everyone takes my word that If it can happen to me, it can happen to you, too. I hope we start seeing more good news popping up soon. Safferz 1
SapperDaddy Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Hi all, I was sure I wasn't going to get crazy about this process, but I cracked and here I am. Anyone have any good news they care to report yet?
goldielocks Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 Where's everyone else been? Avoiding the board in an attempt to stay sane?
ChasingMavericks Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Is anybody applying to the New School or Southern Connecticut State University?
crater21 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Happy New Year, everyone! goldielocks - congrats on the fellowship nomination!! That is wonderful news! I'm done 6/7 apps, and one is due later this month. I almost feel like the process never really ended, and before we know it, it'll be decision time!
goldielocks Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 Crater, I agree on the feeling that this process sort of just keeps going. It's like a blur. I can't believe it'll soon be February and we'll all start receiving results.
SapperDaddy Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Is anyone getting any interviews or any sort of feedback from any schools? Anyone going for a campus visit or something?
goldielocks Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 SapperDaddy, I think it's still quite early to be hearing anything from any programs. I spoke with a POI about a fellowship opportunity, but she even said that their program doesn't start giving offers until the first or second week of February — and they're one of the earlier ones. I know it's hard to wait. I'm just saying I wouldn't be at all discouraged if you haven't heard anything yet. It's far too early.
telemaque Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Congrats, goldielocks! That's a great way to start off the New Year! I looked at my calendar yesterday and couldn't believe that February 1 was exactly 4 weeks away (so soon!)...and then I realized that mid-March is actually more like 10 weeks away. This is going to be a fun next few months! I think I'm going to take up yoga again.
sandyvanb Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Goldie congrats! That is amazing news! I am officially done with the application process! Ten applications finished, I just need to watch for the last couple of LoRs to get submitted. Now I just need to forget about them for the next 4-8 weeks...
goldielocks Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Thanks, Sandy. And congrats on finishing your apps! I think all of your work with teaching and course preps should keep you occupied until results come in. Also, I have an interesting question for you -- I'll PM you.
sandyvanb Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I am now turning my attention back to class prep.. Syllabus revision is on the agenda for this evening!

On another level, I am just getting crazier by the day and worried more and more that I didn't get in or something. I know I'm not being rational about all this, but the wait is just killing me.
goldielocks Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Sapper, I understand. It's a very stressful process. I am just trying to keep from going crazy by pouring my nervous energy into things like finishing my MA thesis, or catching up on reading. This process really will eat up as much of your energy as you allow it to.

Yes, this is definitely an agonizing process. Try to reach the point where you know that it's literally out of your control and just take it easy. Read an 800 page book or read for fun. Hopefully you won't be able to do so for a long, long time........ I'm not even supposed to be on this board.
goldielocks Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 I'm not even supposed to be on this board. Haha, but then who would I have to help me procrastinate on this conference paper?
crazedandinfused Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Haha, but then who would I have to help me procrastinate on this conference paper? Agh, you conference paper-presenters make me feel so pessimistic about my chances!!! I've already begun to plot the process which will turn my writing sample into a presentable paper, and I'm not that far away (I hope). What I need is to get into a program where I can do that....... It being Friday of the first week of most semesters, I have a thoroughly unfounded hunch that adcoms are meeting today. Please lord.
goldielocks Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 ...I have a thoroughly unfounded hunch that adcoms are meeting today. Please lord. Haha, I would suspect it's a bit too early for that. Give it a week or two before initial meetings, I think. Until then, have a cocktail!

Honestly, don't sweat a conference paper too hard unless it's a big conference that people are trying to make a name for themselves like AHA. Most of your small type conferences, half the full professors write their paper like the day before on a napkin it seems. Once you pop your paper cherry, it's much easier from then on. Which conference are you hoping to submit to?
goldielocks Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 Once you pop your paper cherry... Um, ew. Safferz 1
