Luckige Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Luckige--you were waitlisted at Illinois but admitted to Berkeley ... how strange... I know! Since I have a different background (BA, MA in Economics, international applicant) I believe my process is more random than usual. I guess the "black box admission theory" played its part. On a side note, one LOR arrived way after the UIUC's deadline, only one week before they started sending notifications. I guess I can stop cursing the lazy professor now.
Luckige Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Well, we have to do instructorships (aka TA) during 2nd and 3rd years I think. Other than that it's catch-free Hmmm...
scintille Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Talked to a friend in the PS office at Michigan and my advisor. Apparently they have a ton of applications ("a room filled with folders") 130 applicants in comparative. And they're still reading and will be done in about two weeks.

Great, I guess i can count them out too. lol.

There are 130 people in the world that want to study comparative politics?!? WHAT?! And then, the sharks...
doctorwho Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Hey another Stanford admit on the board. Are they still calling folks?
convex Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 holy shit. i thought maybe UCLA had to cut back because of the budget crisis. but that wouldn't make sense if cal is being so generous. why the major discrepancy? I do not think discrepancy has nothing to do with budget fluctuations. I'm pretty sure UCLA's funding packages are quite a bit worse then Cal's in any year. UCLA does not even fund all students. I think funding packages have to do with the University's standing in the CA legislature (not as good for anyone else as it is for Berkeley), percentage of faculty with grants, and a number of other things. Although, SF is also more expensive than LA (though probably not THAT much more).
natofone Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 UCLA is right next to beverly hills and belair in a very expensive part of LA.
theorygirl Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 UCLA is right next to beverly hills and belair in a very expensive part of LA. I agree. When I lived in LA I paid over $1800/month in rent. Plus, unlike other big cities, like San Fran, it's nearly impossible to get around without a car.
plisar Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Yup, in at WUSTL! Hey congrats, when did you find out?
convex Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 The email was sent about two hours ago. I assume it was a form email, since it started "Dear applicant" and was pretty long and formal. Looks like a couple more were sent out.
convex Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Thanks. I finally feel like I can relax a bit.
cjh19 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 In at UT-Austin, but no funding. Financial crisis! *Fists*
yinz_guys Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 In at UT-Austin, but no funding. Financial crisis! *Fists* Congrats either way.
technocat Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 In at UT-Austin, but no funding. Financial crisis! *Fists* You can take my funding. I doubt I will go, though I like the department a lot. Texas is so far, and I have some options closer to home.
CatallaxisOfEvil Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Well I emailed the DGS at NYU a couple of hours ago, I suppose no response to expect this evening... I've decided to hold off on Brandeis for now. They'll notify when they notify.
lon-nol Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Hello all, Another political theory lurker here, recently admitted to Duke with funding. Congrats to all who have received good news, and best wishes to those who have been disappointed or are still waiting. This is not an enviable process.

convex Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Congrats on Duke! Say hello to Coach Krzyzewski for me.
lon-nol Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Yes, there is a link in my Duke account to an electronic decision letter. I also received an e-mail.
IRdreams Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 IR lurker. Called the DGS at Stanford. All decisions will be given out by Monday it sounds like. They asked for my name so before telling me so I'm not so hopeful.
