Dear mwash,

Of your accepted list (Chicago, Duke, UCSD, Berkeley) Chicago is, I believe, leaning more towards constructivist work as of late, although some have told me that their program is kind of in disarray. I talked to some students there last year who had some real horror stories. UCSD has a very good reputation as a stats oriented comparative school, as does Duke and Berkeley. As far pursuing a realist research agenda, I would think that Duke would be the best one. Good luck!

As a current student at U of Chicago, I am curious why you think Chicago is going in a constructivist direction? I think you might want to do some more research on that one. (Or are you trying to mess with the guy who got in?)

I'm guessing that the person was joking. Chicago isn't constructivist at all. You have the realists (Pape, Mearsheimer, etc.) and liberals (Snidal, Lipson, etc.). They did NOT produce Wendt, so every IR theory course makes you read Social Theory of International Relations so that they can rip it in half, but other than that there ain't much constructivism going on.

They did not "produce" Wendt.

This is the problem with online posting. It is so hard to tell when someone is being sarcastic, or when they are just confused. At any rate, for anyone accepted to Chicago who wants more info, feel free to PM me.

Cheers,

There will always be a few people who try to sabotage other applicants, but overall I think the material on this board has been informative and useful. I have found that the vast majority of individuals who post in this forum are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. That makes me happy!! :D

Yes this board is great! I've been reading it for about a month now and its been very helpful. Jimcompx, your view Is pretty consistent with my own research so far, except for Chicago going constructivist. And adaptations, I will PM you, thanks. Also, aren't there some new rankings coming out soon?

Congratulations to all those who got accepted at UChicago. :)

I see a 'wait-listed' post on the results page. So are they out with all their decisions to are there still more to be given out?

Chicago is my longest long shot. It would be good to know the rejection. No surprises here.

wendt taught there for some time...i've heard stories that he would have stayed, but left primarily because his wife got a better job offer elsewhere. chicago is a great program, but it has lost a lot of great people over the past 10 years or so. wendt and walt are two of the bigger names that come to mind. and glaser is leaving (though he's only loosely affiliated with the poli sci dept., I think). still, its usually regarded as one of the five best departments in the country.

Hhhmmm... where is Glaser going? Haven't heard this news before.

The word is that Glaser is going to GW.

Interesting. When is he moving there? Also, was there any specific reason for his departure?

I checked the application page at UChicago and it listed that they haven't received my writing sample but I'm pretty sure I have sent it with other supplemental materials. :o:o :?

I just had a funny feeling, as the clock strikes 12:00, that UNC is going to be emailing its applicants today.

From your fingers to god's ears.

So....anyone know if Chicago sends out notices in waves? Otherwise I guess I'm out of running. Still haven't heard definitively from UVA either. grrrrrr

In the same boat with UVA still.

And for those waiting on rutgers, my online status just changed to admitted (no email from department yet so no information on funding).

Congrats! :)

I'm not expecting to hear much in the next week or so. But I now check this site rather obsessively whenver I can throughout the day. I get to work shortly after 7 on the east coast, so I guess the rate of postings doesn't really heat up until mid-morning.

Congratulations to those of you who are being admitted to some very, very fine schools.

For myself, I'm hoping to see some more Indiana notices, since they didn't start coming in until late yesterday. Also, UNC, which I'm beginning to think is just a legend that lures the unwary to their dooms, like El Dorado or Atlantis.
