ubiquity Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Anyone out there applying at the doctoral level to programs in Library and Information Studies/Science and/or iSchools? priya 1
Gramo Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I am! I only applied to one iSchool doc program (Michigan)...the rest are in communication studies. What about yourself?
ubiquity Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 At the risk of betraying my superstitious nature, I've got six pending, myself.
amalexander Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Has anyone heard from Michigan's SI phd program? I saw that someone posted on the results section that they'd been rejected, but I'm still waiting for word from them.
Lastig Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 So there is really only 3 Ischool phd prospects around?
amalexander Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Well, with an applicant pool of 4, I think I might have a decent shot.
Jakrabite Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Hello ISchool applicants! I am the aforementioned Michigan reject (lol...what a way to make a name for myself!). I got rejected by Berkeley as well today. So although I add to the applicant pool, I'm guessing I won't be providing you much competition. I still have six applications left though. Best of luck and keep in touch.
Lastig Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I am right there with you on the Umich one, hope you get some good news soon on one of the others.
Jakrabite Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I am right there with you on the Umich one, hope you get some good news soon on one of the others. I was hopeful about UMich. So don't know what to think about my more ambitious apps now. If you want we can compare notes later on ...say early March. It's hard meeting people in the same field online. Cheers.
santa Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I'm here.... rejected by U-M, waiting on two others.
jesso21 Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 just a couple quick questions, Does the prestige (for lack of a better term) of your masters program matter much when applying to PhD LIS programs? Also, what sort of things should I be doing during my MLIS to prepare my CV and experiences for a doctorate program? (other than working in a related job)
boots Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I'm hoping to revive this thread for a new set of applicants (matriculating in Fall 2010). Any new Ph.D. hopefuls--especially those straight out of undergrad? Research interests?
Ivy Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 (edited) I'm hoping to revive this thread for a new set of applicants (matriculating in Fall 2010). Any new Ph.D. hopefuls--especially those straight out of undergrad? Research interests? I've applied to the University of Washington and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to study cataloging and classification for arts-related libraries and collections. priya Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Anyone out there applying at the doctoral level to programs in Library and Information Studies/Science and/or iSchools? yeah I am applying to the doctoral programs in ischool for fall 2010 session..... Applied: 7 Accepted: Rejected:
BlueandBuff Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Two results from Michigan so far... If you're one of them, can you comment on your subfields, etc.?
In4mation Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 yeah I am applying to the doctoral programs in ischool for fall 2010 session..... Applied: 7 Accepted: Rejected: I am also applying to 3 programs. I was denied by Maryland, waiting on Michigan, and contacted by the Dir of Syracuse for a phone interview, but there was a scheduling conflict, so I am waiting for a reschedule. Though, that was last Thursday. Should I be getting worried?
BlueandBuff Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 In4mation, I don't think I'd be getting worried yet, what with Snowmaggedon and all. I work in a job where I cover the East Coast, and I can tell you that my phone's been pretty silent the past few days. Hopefully we'll both get positive responses from Michigan! It's my only iSchool program - the rest of my applications are in European History - but it's the one I'll take if I can get it :-)
mrkupe Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 I'm hoping to revive this thread for a new set of applicants (matriculating in Fall 2010). Any new Ph.D. hopefuls--especially those straight out of undergrad? Research interests? I'd have to think that applicants straight out of undergrad are at a pretty strong disadvantage. Most MLIS programs are almost entirely composed around master's-level education . . .considering that there are a number of very well-qualified individuals applying to Ph.D. programs out of other disciplines, I'd have to think somebody out of undergrad would need some amazing qualifications. To be honest, I don't know why any department would take the risk associated with a student who has never had to deal with graduate-level studies when there are other candidates to be found.
bgav Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Hi I was admitted to Michigan, I was accepted about a week ago. My area is Human-Computer Interaction and I applied with a bachelor's degree (which I am finishing now). To be fair, I've had a lot of experience being a TA and RA at the school I attend.

If you don't mind, could you put up your stats so the rest of us?
bgav Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Hi My stats: 700 V 770 Q 5.0 AW approx 3.8 GPA from a top ranked college. 3 years research experience, 1.5 years TA experience. 1 publication, 1 submission.
caffeinated librarian Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Does anyone know what job prospects are like for Ph.Ds in Library and Information Science? (As opposed to, say, English?)
Jus10 Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 Does anyone know what job prospects are like for Ph.Ds in Library and Information Science? (As opposed to, say, English?) I just started my MLIS, and am wondering the same thing... what advantages does getting the PhD have? I mean, I guess there is being a professor, but..... yeah... I don't know... What are you current PhD students and applicants planning on doing with the degree?
