t_ruth Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 To help w/the boredom/waiting...thought we might enjoy some easy polls (wish I could add more in each post)... How old are you?
linden Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 t_ruth: This a very depressing poll for some of us.
t_ruth Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 yeah, there was some (very little) logic to the intervals, but it's my poll, so nanny nanny boo boo (four years each for what I thought were the most common ages, and then widening ranges...)
linden Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Ha, t_ruth, your polls are amusing. I'm still debating whether I should answer with my real age or my "public" age. At least it's keeping my mind off grad school decisions. It's too bad you guys are all in the US and asleep when I wake up. I usually have eight hours of agonizing over decisions before the fun begins on thegradcafe.com each day.
CAPoliSciPhD Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I object to both the intervals of both polls!!! Only bc I'm one of those with a GRE score that ends 00... and bc my age is the last year in a group...heh.
CAPoliSciPhD Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 linden, what part of the world are you in?
t_ruth Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 I'm up all night linden (have a little baby who doesn't sleep).
linden Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 t_ruth: Kudos for doing this with child in tow. I've barely been able to get through a one-page essay today, and I only have a dog to care for.
t_ruth Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 Basically all I can do while nursing or baby juggling is forum-browse and watch TV. Luckily dh gives me time to do applications, etc.
CAPoliSciPhD Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 West Africa? Yeah, I'd bet there's a time difference.
ridgey Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 It's too bad you guys are all in the US and asleep when I wake up. I usually have eight hours of agonizing over decisions before the fun begins on thegradcafe.com each day. Not me! But definitely not in your time zone either...
freefallen Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Man, do I feel like the kid of the forum, lol. Barely past the very first grouping.
CAPoliSciPhD Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 You mean second, right? You're over 21? You shouldn't feel so young - that group is large: 21-24
freefallen Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Yes, but I just turned legal not too long ago therefore barely passing from the first group to second. ... :? Hope that made sense, hah. That's what I get for doing thesis and surfing the web.
t_ruth Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 I guess when you get over 30, 21 doesn't seem much different than 24, lol
pregasauraus Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I'm up all night linden (have a little baby who doesn't sleep). Good to know that others do this academia thing with kids. I'm 5 months pregnant (we timed it so I'd deliver after the end of the Spring semester), and I'm getting nervous about facing a PhD path with babies. That doesn't mean I won't be overjoyed when I get accepted somewhere.
rising_star Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Should I answer with my current age, age when I applied to MA programs, or age when I applied to PhD programs?
engimo Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Jeez. This make me feel young, for sure. I'm the only one less than 21 that is applying so far.
miratrix Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I'd say current age, and you may be overthinking it
Tritonetelephone Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 All the grad students in my classes last semester (at my UG univ) were much older than me... 30's and 40's. This makes me feel much better that maybe things will be less awkward from here on out.
UnlikelyGrad Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 All I can say is, I'm glad I'm not the only one in the 33-39 age range.

That doesn't mean I won't be overjoyed when I get accepted somewhere. LOL...my son was due (and born) in April for the same reason. So he'll be 16 months when I start my Ph.D.! It's definitely do-able (at least it's been okay so far while I'm working full-time - in the fall I was taking a class and doing my applications, too) but wow, does it require coffee!
