So i think NSE|RC will remain the same proportion oflast year (50% for MSc and Phd ) and 10% for PDF

What do you think ?

PDF will likely go up. Someone posted something earlier today indicating that PDFs were low because they over-stretched in 2010. CGS/PGS will likely be the same.

but this sited does not end in .ca or .fr...does it?

Neither does Facebook, but people still talk in any language they want on it.

If you apply for NSERC , you should be a permanant resident or a canadian citizen. Shouldn't you ?

Carleton university has not heard anything yet. It is weird that Ottawa university knew the results before us.

I'm not sure Ottawa University really knew before anyone else... I think that the guy who got the CGS likely had a PGS that got upgraded to a CGS (this happened to my friend, and it was at about the same time of year 2 years ago), and the francophonePhD guy likely got a PDF but accidentally said CGS.. and maybe the two rejections at Ottawa were inside knowledge or maybe their applications were never forwarded and the university just told them... who knows. NSERC said many times they weren't sending letters until after the budget, so I really think that at least the vast majority of letters haven't been sent.

Do you really think that NSERC had no real idea about the budget ? Do you think they hadn't any leak about it, before today ?

I don't know, but it's kinda hard for me to digest that !

Maybe not, but they did keep telling everyone who emailed them that letters would not go out until after the 29th, right?

From the "Budget in Brief" from budget.gc.ca:

"Economic Action Plan 2012 will:

ï‚· Increase funding for research and development by small and medium-

sized companies.

ï‚· Promote linkages and collaborations, including funding internships and

connecting private sector innovators to procurement opportunities in

the federal government.

ï‚· Refocus the National Research Council on research that helps Canadian

businesses develop innovative products and services.

ï‚· Enhance access to venture capital financing by high-growth companies

so that they have the capital they need to create jobs and grow.

ï‚· Streamline and improve the Scientific Research and Experimental

Development tax incentive program, including shifting from indirect

tax incentives to more direct support for innovative private

sector businesses.

ï‚· Support research, education and training with new funding for

universities, granting councils and leading research institutions,

such as Genome Canada. "

Points 1-5 seem to be bad for us (non-industry)......point 6 isn't clear how it will affect grants to graduate students.....

If you search through the budget you will notice they are planning "savings" of 15 million this year and 30 million the next two years from NSERC. I think this means there will be some cuts. They are shifting the money to industry friendly research areas (the new funding talked about above). I don't think this is good news for those of us that are not doing applied research.

I'm working in a gov. lab and everyone was on their toes over the budget coming out. There were rumours, but I don't think NSERC knew what to expect either.

I found directly in the budget document:

Promoting Post-Secondary and Private Sector Research Collaborations

Economic Action Plan 2012 proposes $37 million annually to enhance the granting councils’ support for industry-academic research partnership initiatives.

The federal granting councils support outstanding research and advanced training at post-secondary institutes and research hospitals. The granting councils have been increasing their focus on partnerships between post-secondary researchers and companies to target research to business needs and transfer knowledge into economic advantage.

The granting councils will be pursuing operational efficiencies and reallocation of funding from lower-priority programs to generate savings. The Government will fully reinvest 2012–13 savings in priority areas of the granting councils, particularly in industry-academic partnerships.

Specifically, Economic Action Plan 2012 proposes $37 million annually starting in 2012–13 to the granting councils to enhance their support for industry-academic research partnership initiatives. The new resources for the councils will be allocated as follows:

  • $15 million per year to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for its Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research.
  • $15 million per year to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council for its Strategy for Partnerships and Innovation.
  • $7 million per year to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council for its industry-academic partnership initiatives.

See it for yourself here: http://www.budget.gc...hap3-1-eng.html

The second point is the only direct reference to 'NSERC' in the entire budget.

No, if you download the full version of the budget you will see the cuts I am talking about. The entire PDF can be obtained here: http://www.budget.gc.ca/2012/plan/toc-tdm-eng.html

Search "Natural Sciences" and you will see in Table A1.13 "Planned Savings—Industry Portfolio" that they are planning on "saving" 15 million this year and 30 million the next two years from NSERC. This might not mean any cuts to scholarships and fellowships, but the money will have to come from somewhere.

I am just happy that NSERC has no more excuses in holding my rejection letter in their office, figures crossed I will get it in mail tomorrow.

More like Monday or Tuesday, I would wager. Remember this is government right? They'll need tomorrow to figure out who gets it and who doesn't and to put the letters in the mail. Monday for Canada Post to process it and Tuesday for Ottawa to recieve it.

Which means that westerners like me won't get it until after Easter. /sigh.

Is there any chance that PDF results are released by the universities?

There will be no cuts more than last year for PGS/CGS and PDF. So proportion will be 50%, 50% and 9-10%

If you want to know tomorrow the answer, you have to ask your department.

For Montreal, i think Tuesday will be the big day !!!

When you guys talk about the department releasing the PDF results, are you talking about your former university, or the new one? It is unclear to me how the new one will know if you got the award (since you only need to suggest places on the application - nothing is official). Just trying to figure out if there is any way I can find out sooner about the PDF (rather than waiting for my letter to arrive to me in the US - west coast at that!).
