hope4fall2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 From his website: I also encourage applicants to take the Physics GRE, though I don’t require it. Don't you hate ambiguous statements like these?? andmoo22 1
parable151 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 That kind of ambiguity might be really hard to deal with in a person you are working for. So maybe you dodged a bullet.
parable151 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Just got an email from Stanford, denied. Doesn't look good for Berkeley then. It's ok though because I think doing a Master's first really is the most appropriate thing for me. The only dread is doing this process all over again in two years.
hope4fall2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 (edited) Don't write off Berkeley as yet.. Its not over till its over.. Atleast thats what I tell myself. It's ok though because I think doing a Master's first really is the most appropriate thing for me. The only dread is doing this process all over again in two years. I don't think you'll regret it that much.. You'll have the experience of going through the whole application cycle, which cannot hurt.. You'll have done much more focused research and you don't have to write the GRE again.. The time and money you'll spend again is a pain though.. Edited March 10, 2012 by hope4fall2012
parable151 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Those are very good points...but oh, the waiting. But thanks for the encouragement!
hope4fall2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Yeah, how could I forget that!!! Waiting!!! Thats the worst part of the whole application process.. Well, maybe if you apply again, you'll get an admit from someplace in the first week of January and may not have to wait.. .. well, who am I kidding..
Gneiss1 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Has anyone heard anything back yet from these schools?: University of Maryland (College Park) Virginia Tech (Blacksburg) University of Florida (Gainesville) University of South Florida (Tampa) Notre Dame Geophysics field with the exception of Notre Dame (I applied to their ESTEEM program)
Kitkat Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Got into Columbia EESC! Congrats! Are you going to wait for all of your schools to finish getting back to you, or do you now know where you want to go?
terrencewang Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Anyone received official information from MIT EAPS yet? Still no news.
Sit Rex Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Has anybody heard anything from University of Utah? I applied and have yet to hear back, so I called the Graduate Admissions Office in the Geology and Geophysics Department. The woman who answered said there's a chance I won't know for sure until mid-April!! ...waiting ><
hope4fall2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 All the best for Utah!! Hope you don't have to wait till the middle of Apr to find out. Have you heard from any other places as yet?
Sit Rex Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Not yet; I also applied to Florida State and am waiting to hear back from them. I thought about calling their department as well; I'm just never quite sure how to phrase me asking if they're going to respond soon or not, haha.
hope4fall2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 The results survey says that March 15-16 is when Berkeley EPS announces its results.. Hope they stick to the same schedule this year too.. All the best to everyone whose waiting!! I have a bad feeling about it though, don't think I'll make the cut..
parable151 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I feel the same way, barring a miracle. I would just like to get the results and be done with it either way.
meki4life Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) Hi guys so I have a question, at this point do you think people who applied but don't get any response/interview from the POI still have a chance to get in? Because I asked my undergraduate advisor and in my university and he said that they usually called/invite the prospective students that they really interested in and then leave everyone else in the wait list incase someone dropped out so all the acceptance letter would arrive in late february/early march and then they'll sent all the rejection letters all at once in early april for all the remaining smucks. I'm really sorry I don't want to be a downer here I'm kinda in similar situation I haven't heard anything back from MIT EAPS and Berkeley and kinda losing hope on those schools the wait is messing up with my brain Edited March 15, 2012 by meki4life

I'm really sorry I don't want to be a downer here I'm kinda in similar situation I haven't heard anything back from MIT EAPS and Berkeley and kinda losing hope on those schools the wait is messing up with my brain I finally gave in and called/emailed some of the schools I applied to today. Two I haven't heard a response back yet, but two of them said they still hadn't sent out any letters yet. The final one said they had made some offers but then she was really vague after to that as to whether there were still more going out or what, but I got the feeling that school was basically as you put it with first offers sent out and just waiting for responses to tell everyone else. I feel like for schools that its already known offers have been made that we are probably just sitting ducks hoping some top choices say no. Try to stay optimistic though. There are still departments that havent made all their offers yet. In the case it ends up all rejections try to have a abck up plan and figure out if you will reapply next year? It's not over till its over though!
meki4life Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 yeah I got accepted to University of Rochester Ph.D program so don't worry about it, the professor that I applied to is a really great guy and he already had a couple of science papers under his name so I think I would be in good hand. But thanks for worrying, I just feel kinda bad leaving his offer hanging and keep waiting for other top schools when I don't think I have that good of a chance of getting admitted there anyway. And good luck for everyone else in this board, sorry for the downer question and stay optimistic
hope4fall2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 If its Berkeley and MIT you're waiting for, then I guess there are quite a few people here who are waiting to hear from them.. So I guess they've not made their decisions yet.. Or they've made their decisions already and none of the people on this forum have been the ones who have been admitted or rejected.. I'm waiting for Berkeley too, but no for much longer..
taofeek88 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Hi everyone, Taofeek from Nigeria here. I applied for the MSc Technical Entrepreneurship and Management program at the University of Rochester. Anyone heard from Rochester for MSc in any engineering course?? Congrats meki4life
taofeek88 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 and yeah, McGill University, MEng Electrical Engineering! still waiting for their decision too. Anyone heard from them yet?
NoNO Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 This isn't for any kind of engineering. This is Earth Science. No one here has heard from those programs. LCBucky and NoNO 2
parable151 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I already kind of hate Berkeley for taking so long to make decisions...I wonder if this is part of their weeding out method? Grrr.
hope4fall2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Well, if it IS a weeding method, I think they've succeeded.. I'm done waiting.. This Monday I'm accepting another offer and moving on with life!! LCBucky 1
LCBucky Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Well, if it IS a weeding method, I think they've succeeded.. I'm done waiting.. This Monday I'm accepting another offer and moving on with life!! Congrats!
