HunkyDory Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Anyone know how long these things should be? I can't find anything to give an indication. Mine's 970 words right now, roughly the length of my SoP. I just have no idea if I'm lowballing it by a thousand words or not.
Safferz Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 I believe the limit is 1000 words (that's what it was for my history application, at least)
woolferine Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I just submitted mine (!!), and it's around 1000 words (I had written down that it was supposed to be 1000 words, but I can't find the place on the site anymore that told me that). In any case, good luck!!!
MrBrooklyn Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 (edited) Mine was 930, about the same length as my SOP. Edited December 5, 2011 by MrBrooklyn
TheHymenAnnihilator Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I've heard from folks in the program that it's about 500 words typically... TheHymenAnnihilator 1
MrBrooklyn Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I was really historically oppressed though. MauBicara 1
wintergirl Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I've heard from folks in the program that it's about 500 words typically... 500 words?!?! Yow.
rawera Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I am pretty stuck on this one. Harder than the SOP.
HunkyDory Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 I am pretty stuck on this one. Harder than the SOP. Really? I sat down and pounded it out super quickly. I haven't had an racial/economic obstacles, and my research and experience has nothing to do with that, but I thought of an angle and rolled with it. Not too hard...
wintergirl Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Without any guidelines on length for this or for the SOP (please tell me if I missed that somewhere!!!), mine are both about 1100 words. Meh. Writing sample's calling...
MrBrooklyn Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I didn't see any specification for word count either. I just wrote until I felt like I had a comprehensive representation.
xfgdfrmgpo332 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 What about Berkeley's regular SOP (not personal history/diversity statement)...does it have a word limit? I don't remember seeing anything on their site or the app. Would it be bad i went well over 1000; say, 1300-1400? I know Im gonna have to cut this to 1000 for some schools
Enzian Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I don't have a word limit noted in my spreadsheet (...I know...) for Berkeley's SOP and don't remember seeing one - my own was 1200 and my personal (diversity) statement was 630. I doubt they can be too strict with word limits since there don't seem to be any posted. Because that would be unfair, right? ...right?
coffeeplease Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 I don't have a word limit noted in my spreadsheet (...I know...) for Berkeley's SOP and don't remember seeing one - my own was 1200 and my personal (diversity) statement was 630. Oh crap. I based my SOP for Berkeley around the guide on their website, which says 500-600 words unless otherwise specified. Or is that just a suggestion?
rawera Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 I kept my standard 1000 for the SOP and did something like 350 for the personal history. Let's call it "economy of language."
Origin=Goal Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 @ rawere: Impressive discipline, but I'm not one to buy into the myth of scarcity
rawera Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I followed my prof's advice: "don''t equate, don't one up. Never a good idea, but never legit for white guys" so I kept it brief. For once I skipped the abstract ramblings on race and all that.
