  1. Don't feel guilty! Just think of all the (hundreds of) worthy students that these schools rejected.
  2. Berkeley, for Romanticism and Modernism. Rather excited. Also, Synecdoche, New York is my favorite movie of all time!
  3. To echo rawera about GRE: I got an 800 on Verbal and 780 on Subject, and got rejected from plenty of places. I got into some good places too, but it certainly wasn't because of good GRE scores.
  4. If you can't share I understand, and you may not even know, but any chance you could say which three are leaving? Just curious. (aka I got rejected there and want to make myself feel better by saying "oh, my poi(s) are leaving, that's why")
  5. If anyone is going to Brandeis to work with Laura Quinney - MAD PROPS! She is amazing (don't know her as a person, but her scholarship is some of the best stuff on Romanticism now, I think).
  6. Yeah. That same person also spelled Gordon Braden's name wrong in their post...I guess they aren't that interested in UVA?
  7. Nope it's not rude at all. And I'm pretty sure I'm not going there, though it's a good program with a VERY generous financial offer (just not the best fit for me). I'm waiting to visit my number 1 choice (in like 10 days) before I let Cornell know, though, just to keep that the Cornell open in the unlikely situation that I absolutely hate the city/department of my number 1. But in all probability I'll tell Cornell thanks but no thanks within two weeks. Best of luck to you Lithlyapo! BTW what's your field? I do 19th and 20th century transatlantic (mostly poetry).
  8. (I second the above Blake). Can't pick a true favorite, but here are the incredible last two stanzas of Hart Crane's "Proem: To Brooklyn Bridge": Under thy shadow by the piers I waited; Only in darkness is thy shadow clear. The City’s fiery parcels all undone, Already snow submerges an iron year . . . O Sleepless as the river under thee, Vaulting the sea, the prairies’ dreaming sod, Unto us lowliest sometime sweep, descend And of the curveship lend a myth to God.
  9. Am I the only one who interviewed and still got flat-out rejected? I figured I might have blown the interview, but this kinda sucks...
  10. I don't mean to get falsely get anyone's hopes up yet, but I just checked my email recieved my acceptance, and the email wasn't sent until like 30 minutes ago...so they still could be sending acceptances...

  12. (considers doing the same) (shrugs and continues working on his barely coherent thesis on Hart Crane (!) in a tiny study carrel on the top floor of a deathly silent library)
  13. LOL! Who says those sciencey mathy people aren't witty? (I say it actually...but that is funny).
  14. Well there's more to life than books, you know, but not much more... (Morrissey fans anyone?)
  15. For accepted Michigan ppl (English) - did they say anything about a visiting weekend? I got waitlisted and might be interested in visiting if I am lucky enough to get in.
  16. Wow, that Matchbox 20 was also my first CD ever! Then Wallflowers (Bob Dylan's son - I don't think I even knew who Bob Dylan was!)
  17. Yeah we really did apply to a lot of the same places! What's your field? I like Berkeley a lot, although it's not my first or second choice. You? I'm looking forward to visiting in March and who knows, maybe I'll fall in love with it. Congrats on the acceptance and the funding offer....interestingly, they didn't give me a figure for funding, but only said I was nominated for a competitive "university fellowship" and they would let me know the results in the coming weeks. The whole fellowship/funding mechanism with grad schools is still quite mysterious to me...does this mean I'll have no funding if I don't get that fellowship?
  18. Bespeckled: They didn't mention anything about number of admits or even applicants. However, looking at their admission results from last year, 2 or 3 people were accepted a few scattered days before bunch of acceptances went out on one day - then the rejections a few days after that. Since there's only been like 3 acceptances posted (including mine), my guess would be they are definitely not done notifying. I don't want to falsely get anyone's hopes up, so let me reiterate that this is just my conjecture from looking at the board results from last year. But, I wouldn't give up hope! Good luck!
