praying4MSW Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Finally an acceptance!!!! I'm really shocked that I've been accepted to Laurier's 2-year M.S.W program. This is my second application season and it feels really great to know that they see something in me. My stats: CGPA = 2.7 ....yes, that's right. No typos here. My CGPA is 2.7. I've spent the last 3 years listening to registrars at my undergrad institution tell me that I will NEVER get accepted to graduate school because my GPA is too low. I even had one guidance counsellor tell me that I should consider going into the trades (which is not an option for me because I'm useless at that sort of thing). To show my committment to social work, I enrolled in the online forensic practice program at Humber College after completing my B.Sc. I truly believe that this helped my application. I've only completed 3 courses so far but I've learned a lot about the field and since I would like to focus on working with offenders, I have found this program to be extremely useful. I know that it's painful to watch other people get accepted while you feel that you're stuck in one place, but NEVER give up. Never let someone tell you that it won't happen for you. Congrats!!! That's so amazing!!! You give everyone hope! What's a 2.7? My university used a 13 point scale, so I'm so confused when people say their GPAs on a 4.0 scale.
Thumper86 Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Congratulations!!!! That is amazing!!! I have to ask you, does Laurier look at the CGPA or just the last two years? If it is the last two years, was your gpa also 2.7 or did you improve? Did they factor in your *new* gpa with your forensic practice program? These distinctions are helpful for those of us who will be applying again next year. It is my understanding that highly competitive programs like the one at Laurier wouldn't even look at an application with a 2.7, so this development is quite interesting! Again, congrats...persistence truly does pay off! I believe that Laurier only looks at your last 2 years which in my case is a B+. Guidance counsellors at my undergrad institution told me that I would never make the cut if I wasn't high above the minimum gpa requirement because then the school I would be applying to would look at my CGPA and mine wouldn't be able to compete. I guess they were very wrong lol. I don't think that my gpa from the college program was included in the gpa calculation. Congrats! That is so exciting what an accomplishment, hard work pays off. Do you mind if I ask which program you applied for at Mcgill? Thanks so much I applied for their M.A in counselling psychology. Way to go Thumper! That's fantastic! Congratulations - Obviously you must have some extremely fantastic experience and a great SoP, which are just as important if not more important than grades! Well deserved Thank you Congrats!!! That's so amazing!!! You give everyone hope! What's a 2.7? My university used a 13 point scale, so I'm so confused when people say their GPAs on a 4.0 scale. Thank you! My undergrad institution considers a 2.7 to be a B-
heneyka Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Hey Decaf, I am also awaiting on UofC and beginning to get very anxious. Thank you for your posts I could let out a sigh of relief knowing that no one else had heard back! This process can make you feel very isolated. Hope to hear from them soon, fingers crossed! Hey Tasha, glad to hear someone else is in it too! Any word from U of C for you? I am contemplating calling them today...even just to say "If you can give me a date, please give me the correct one. Otherwise, give me a general timeline if you don't have a date and I'll stop bothering you." I think my positive experience with Carleton spoiled me...but seriously, I'm trying to figure out how appropriate this is for admins to give guaranteed dates to students when they call and they end up being completely wrong. At least York seems to be honest with people about "End of April" comments. Although we really don't know that until we get there either! Breathe in-out....Sorry if I'm coming across as a negative nancy! My aunt who lives in Calgary reminded me that I am LUCKY to have this kind of 'problem' and she is completely right. What a huge privilege to be in our positions as potential graduate students! So I'm going to try to think that way. Seriously, though, is calling today going to make me start looking super nutso? They never got my name any of the other times I called...
greentealattee Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I am also waiting on U of C, I called on Friday (April13) to ask for an updated on the timeline. No one answered so I left a message and no one has returned my call..personally I would love it if you could call and give us the latest update. They cannot base your acceptance on how many times you call. I don't feel comfortable calling back since they didn't return my last call...the wait is agonizing but do what you gotta do...
heneyka Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I called today. Super unimpressed. Guess what? Their only admin contact around graduate student services is on Vacation until May 14th. Seriously, these folks should win an award for disorganization. The actual other general admin I talked to who wasn't on vacation, which is the same one who told me last week that they were sending everything out April 15th, had no clue about anything. She couldn't even give me a general sense. So evidently there is a gap forming here. They gave me an e-mail of a prof whom I believe is linked with graduate student admission, so I am hoping she can give me some answers. I was polite and composed, I swear! I have not been upset or angry towards an institution throughout this whole process, but I am reaching that point now. On the upside, It's definitely teaching me a lesson about the kind of social worker I do not want to be (ie. one who lies/fibs to clients, one who doesn't do a good job of listening...). Life lessons in all places! heneyka 1
greentealattee Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 OMG, thank you so much for trying and for the update. I am quite shocked by this situation, I would think that someone would know something and that they would not plan to leave us hanging until mid-May..My only glimmer of hope is that perhaps someone is sending out letters to us while this admin person is away. I agree with you, I will never treat anyone like this, in any type of work that I do, or in any personal situation either, I am sure all who are waiting feel the frustrauion as this impacts other areas of life for us all I am sure as well such as employment, family, relationships, recreational interests, housing, etc... Please let me know when you hear back from the prof you are emaling
ball200c Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 If anyone hears any information from Calgary please please let us know! I have been dealing with the same thing.... we will know by the end of March.. letters will be sent out by April 15... and still nothing! Whenever I call no one can seem to provide me with any information! Thanks!
heneyka Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Wow, all of the Calgary applicants are coming out of the woodwork. Hopefully it is a slight comfort to see that we're all struggling through it together. Hang in there everyone! I had a mini-breakdown tonight, but I'm off for some beers and pub food with dear friends and I already feel a bit better. I promise to post something as soon as I hear something, and I hope all will do the same! Hopefully it's not December by then! Lol kidding...should I even joke about that? Best of luck to everyone! Including those who are non-Calgary waiters (Sorry that we have taken over the board a bit today!)
Kaur Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Hello aspiring social workers! I haven't been posting very much and browsing occasionally. It was only after reading all this Calgary discussion that I thought I would share my experience. I received my offer of admission to the U of C's 2 year MSW program on March 27th via email. They required a decision by April 6th. All this time, my status on the application website never changed. Also, I've been rejected from Carleton, wait-listed at U of T, and haven't heard a thing from York...but I guess most of us haven't heard from York. MSW13 1
heneyka Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Hi Kaur, I guess that just adds to the confusion around U of C! But Congratulations on your acceptance! Was it for a particular 2-year program? I know they offer so many different entry points. I did get an e-mail back from the prof I was e-mailing, and she notified me that due to low staff numbers right now, they were behind in sending out letters (of both admission & rejection, I assume), but now Kaur's message is making me think they did send admissions already. Ah well, I guess we shall see in time. The prof said she was trying to get everything out by the end of the week.
heneyka Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Hi everyone, I just thought I'd let you guys know that I heard from the University of Calgary today and was accepted. I am over-the-moon happy and I think I am going to accept the offer. Just waiting to hear back from them on a few things, but if I hear what I'm hoping, I will be headed there in fall 2012! That also means that I will likely be freeing up a spot at Carleton University, so anybody who is on the waitlist can potentially snag that! It was a 2-year MSW, Clinical. Nothing yet from York, but Calgary was my first choice so...YAY! Best of luck to everyone. The wait should be over soon! MSW13 and heneyka 2
Thumper86 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 I just received an email from the University of Calgary and I was waitlisted. If you haven't heard yet, you will probably hear soon. Hang in there!
ladybug3 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 I just rejected my offer at UofT and accepted a M.Ed instead. I hope someone on the waitlist enjoys my spot stephanie.ms.antunes 1
Track_22 Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Hey Everyone, Has anyone else accept the 2 year MSW program at Windsor? I'm looking to meet the other people who have applied or start a facebook group. If anyone has accepted, feel free to message me or comment below. Hope to hear from anyone!

stephanie.ms.antunes Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Does anyone know when York is supposed to send out more acceptances? They said by the 30th last I checked. I hope it won't be on the 30th...lol

I hope it won't be on the 30th...lol I was told we should be notified by mail, by the end of the month. I keep checking the status of MyFile, but it took them about 3 weeks to update the status of one of my references so I bet we'll get notified by mail first.

Well there is really only one more week left of this month, so let's hope we hear by this week!
praying4MSW Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 (edited) Looking through old threads, the last two years York informed applicants (both those accepted and rejected) around May 2nd/3rd via myfile. Edited April 22, 2012 by praying4MSW

heneyka Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Looking through old threads, the last two years York informed applicants (both those accepted and rejected) around May 2nd/3rd via myfile. It does seem like York is a little on the slow side. Luckily, though, I think there's no need to worry after seeing one of our fellow posters already get accepted. I think I'm an ok example of this - one poster was accepted to UCalgary's 2 year program in March, but I got my acceptance last week! Hang in there everyone! By the way...anybody else get accepted to UCalgary? I would love to meet you! I am pretty sure I'm going! heneyka 1
We regret to inform you Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I just got rejected from York. No worries though. I have already accepted another fully funded offer.

Sorry to hear about the rejection but happy that you've already accepted an offer How did you hear back from York about the rejection? Was it via MyFIle or through mail?
We regret to inform you Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 (edited) MyFile Also, i was applying to the earth and space sciences department, not MSW. I had emailed the department on friday since i hadn't heard anything for so long. They responded back late friday saying I would hear this week. I'm not sure if I had "motivated" someone to update my status, or it was just a coincidence and that this week is in fact the week decisions are being sent out for everyone in the department.
