Well, it wasn't me, but I did notice it was a "waitlist/other" entry and the comment stated that Yale doesn't do interviews for the English PhD. I think this comment was left by a Yale hopeful who called the department asking about interviews and thought they would share their info/spare the Yale English Department similar calls from Grad Cafe readers.

Actually, it looked like it was in response to a question - since deleted - about Yale interviews.

A couple of schools moved up their deadline, so it's anybody's guess if that means they'll notify earlier or not. NYU is one such school, I think. Notifications used to be mid-late February, but now, who knows?

Did anyone else apply to UT Austin (well, duh....)? Anyhow, what do we think about them pushing the deadline back by two weeks this year--decisions/notifications pushed back by a similar span as well?

Yegads I hope not! I was hoping this would be done by the end of February, but at that rate we wouldn't hear until what, mid March? I don't think I can sustain this level of anxiety until then!

It's excruciating. I've heard the UT Adcomm board is notorious for later as opposed to earlier conference regarding apps, so I wasn't sure if the two week delay in deadline would further put that off as well. I do, however, know for a fact they hadn't yet met on January 5. Not that many boards probably had....and so we wait.

After looking at the ad boards...again, it looks like CUNY and UMASS results are due out, perhaps by the end of the coming week, though more likely the week after.

Oh man. I somehow managed to put this entire process out of my head after I submitted my applications, but after receiving my first response (acceptance! yay!) I am right back on the obsessing train.

If anyone feels like distracting themselves, I would love to hear about your experiences in M.A. programs. How did it help you? Do you regret anything about it? Any specific advice on getting the most out of the experience?

Hey rzyhaya, sorry if I botched that- I'm on a mobile device and can't go back and see what your exact username is... I'm in an MA program now and applied to PhD programs. I'm waiting for responses but I definitely feel that it has strengthened my app. I've attended three conferences- one at my university, one regional, one national and have been accepted to an international as well. I also have taught 4 composition courses, and have gained an invaluable amount of knowledge through coursework. Also, I've defined my interests much more. We will see how apps turn out... PM me if you wanna share which MA you're looking at or have more questions!

Congrats on your acceptance! I finished my MA last fall, and I regret nothing about doing it first. It helped me both to focus my research interests and to experience what the professional study of literature is all about. I actually wrote up some stuff about my experience in this same thread, back on page 3. Take a look. I'd love to share more if you still have questions.

I'm finishing up my last semester of an MA, and I've found it incredibly beneficial. I was offered a good grant/scholarship package, and the chance to TA in my second year (and i'd been doing the corporate thing for 3 yrs, so had some savings). This made it financially feasible for me, but that is always an individual case, and you will crunch the numbers on your own. It's a huge part of the decision, obviously, and a different matter for everyone.

I knew (from HS, nerd alert) that I wanted a PhD, but being interdisciplinary/cultural studies focused, I had no idea how to articulate or even identify my interests. Also, my sense of theory was shaky, at best, even though I was interested in it. So when people told me "research for fit. Look at faculty bios/work" during my first batch of applications, I had NO IDEA what to look for. The MA has been infinitely helpful in allowing me the space to sort out and learn to articulate my interests. Also, i am proud of my writing sample and generally the work I've produced. The MA also gave me a chance to do more sophisticated service work, attend and present at some conferences, gather stronger letters of rec, etc.

I'm very glad I took the MA offer. It's true that people expect more from MA applicants than undergrad ones, but goodness, if you aren't presenting more after 2 yrs of graduate study, I think there's a problem. I am a proponent of either a 2 yr MA or a 1 yr in which you wait to graduate before completing applications, because otherwise you don't have the chance to actually get any of the benefits of an MA before applying again, but you're still shelling out $$.

Obviously, the less you pay the better. Also, some schools (cough, NYU, Chicago) use their MA students to fund their PhD students. Don't go there!! Everything I've heard is that the environment is toxic and professors don't respect your work. Again, this reduced the benefit of the MA, making it less valuable.

YMMV. Hope this helps.

Gosh, there are SO many acceptances so far, and at such an early stage! I am thrilled for all who have heard back, and also incredibly jealous you have decisions in hand. I hope the sizable amount of positive responses indicates a trend toward mass acceptances this year!

I'm also surprised at how many schools have already made decisions! Last year I didn't even start thinking about hearing back until early March. Ignorance-bliss was had for much longer than this...Oh the days.

By CUNY did you mean the Graduate Center, Grunty DaGnome? Their website is so ambiguous: "These notifications begin in March and continue through June." But yes it does say that their review process begins early February.

I did mean Cuny Grad. Center / English. I'm not going by their web site, rather the date of posted Grad Cafe results from last year. I realize that's not the most accurate predictor since things change from year to year, but I too find their website confusing. It's hard to tell what applies generally and what applies to certain programs sometimes.

Got an acceptance and financial aid information from Davis. I wish all schools were this prompt with their decisions!

Congrats, Origin!

Did you get a call from a POI? (I think that's how most notifications went out last year.)

Congrats, Origin!

Seconded! It's exciting to see familiar faces around here get good news! Not that I don't wish a hearty congrats to the rest of y'all, but, you know, I've been hanging around these parts for a good chunk of time now, and it's nice to see one of us get recognized for being awesome! :D

...Now, hopefully I'll be next!

I heard unofficially from a POI, then the DGS and graduate chair email sent an email. Apparently the application/embark status will change on Feb 2nd, so folks might want to check that out (speaking for Comp Lit here)

Okay - I now see there is a Comp Lit Dept separate from English. Before I was confused by the Comp Lit area of interest within the English Dept.

Congrats again! You have some great options already!

Hey, does anyone know how to check whether or not UF got your materials? I just tried to log back onto the application, clicked on "check status," but then I was only able to see the application I submitted.

So I have never, in the more than ten years since I got this phone number, received a call from a telemarketer. I received one today and, of course, freaked out.

WTF. I seriously think you guys are right - ETS sells our information. What bullshit.
