ewurgler Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 So, are neutiquamerro and migrationdude the only ones who've heard from Berkeley? If they're doing anything close to 40 offers (which they might not be - I got the impression that UNC and Harvard are really cutting back) this year and considering the number on this board who've probably applied, I'd say that there's still plenty of offers to come (although perhaps not with fellowship support). I surely hope you are right, though another acceptance just popped up on the results page.
beeswax Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 YAY! That was me! I really wasn't expecting to get in there. Generic letter, I think, lots of info about funding but they make it sound as though a lot of it is still being worked out. Good luck to everyone! I am sure there are a lot of acceptances still to go out!
ewurgler Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 Damn beeswax, you have really cleaned up this week!! CONGRATS!!! and i hope you are right that there are more acceptances to come
beeswax Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 THANKS SO MUCH! Its been an exciting week. and I'm totally sure there's more to come- a friend of mine last year was admitted in late february/early march (don't remember)- anyway, right before the rejection letters went out and after all the people on grad cafe had posted acceptances so I really think its a gradual process.
hardboiledegg Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Has anyone received word about funding yet?
neutiquamerro Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Basic information comes with the acceptance e-mail. It isn't final, however, until the university committee goes over department fellowship nominations (first week of March). Hope that helps.
nenanubes Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 On the results page it says 6 have been accepted? Is there more people or just a double-click error? Yes....I am hoping for the latter! Congrats to everyone who got in!
international Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 o.k., honest opinion: do we still have a chance? (considering 3-4 ppl were contacted yesterday, probably more that r not on gradcafe...) i'm getting tired of refreshing my e.mail every 5 sec... and another thought- what about international apps? is it possible that we are slightly less welcome this year due to econ issues?

I second that. I wonder if those still waiting have a chance at all. Judging from previous years, maybe it's not impossible that they'll end up sending out more acceptance letters starting this coming week. I also know two more people who have got accepted who are not part of this forum, so... I guess that brings the number up to 8 accepted people.
slothy Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 (Deleted on account of this post having been very presumptuous of me.)
ewurgler Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 Slothy--most PhD programs have around 50% attrition---only like 40% of those who start a PhD finish. Though I'm not holding out for berkeley and probably wouldn't go, I think there is a chance admissions may still trickle out, as they really figure out how many students they can support. I've heard of programs sending out acceptances to those they all know they want, and they going back, figuring out how many more they can fund, and unfortunately picking people who are domestic, or even california residents so the funding burden would be considerably less. To international: I am afraid to say that yes, I think international applicants will be the ones who really feel it this year. My undergrad institution (one department) said they were only taking 1 international student, no matter how great the other ones were.
Aeternalis Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 To international: I am afraid to say that yes, I think international applicants will be the ones who really feel it this year. My undergrad institution (one department) said they were only taking 1 international student, no matter how great the other ones were. Umm...I am an international student who has applied to your undergrad institution, since you would obviously be "in the know" about departmental policies, should be preparing myself for a forseeable rejection?
ewurgler Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 Well, I'm not sure about sociology, the department I was talking about was communication (my significant other is a grad there). Sociology is a bigger department overall, and their strategy may be different. In Communcation, they decided that they would limit it to one international student rather than cut down the overall size of the cohort, as they are committed to fully funding each student they admit. I'm not sure about soc, but I would imagine the UCs and other public schools where state budgets are in trouble is where international applicants will get shafted. I don't have any info about the soc department, but there are major cuts all around...they just axed the senior seminar program for undergrads, one of the only opportunities to have a course that is under 80 people. Very sad. I'm sorry for the bummer news....good luck!!! If you do get in, they really have a ton of great people there and the other departments are incredibly strong as well! I cannot say enough good things about it.
Aeternalis Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Thanks ewurgler! And Congrats on getting into UNC!
ejuliast Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 just got an acceptance letter. woot! Me too!! So we're the two who just posted (with similar comments)?
nyghtfalls Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 just got rejected from berkeley with the PHAT CC on everyone else's email. They sent out a mass email so that you could see who was in the reject pile along with you, lol! That's OD. ah well, c'est la vie!
Redseele Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 just got rejected from berkeley with the PHAT CC on everyone else's email. They sent out a mass email so that you could see who was in the reject pile along with you, lol! That's OD. ah well, c'est la vie! Yeah. I saw two emails from friends of mine. It was 99 people who got that email. I wonder who they sent it too (rejected, yes, but what tier of rejections this was, I wonder).
waitinginohio Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Yeah. I saw two emails from friends of mine. It was 99 people who got that email. I wonder who they sent it too (rejected, yes, but what tier of rejections this was, I wonder). Yeah, I too got an e-mail with the addresses of MANY other rejected applicants, including someone I go to school with, and at least one person I recognized from this forum. I'm just waiting for someone to reply all so we can start corresponding about how unprofessional Berkeley is! The program also lost one of my letters of recommendation, as well as an LOR of the other rejected student from my school, and 2 LORs for a friend who applied for a MA in a different department. They need to get their act together!
Tritonetelephone Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I'm sure someone will forward it to the dean and complain about having their email address exposed. They probably had a student assistant do it, but I'm a student assistant at a grad school, I've sent out mass acceptance emails (for scholarships), and I know to put all recipients in the BCC. That's just common sense.
misterpat Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hahaha. Sorry that you folks didn't get in, but that's a pretty hilarious story. I wonder if their graduate secretary did that and is going to get an earful from someone tomorrow.
ewurgler Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 Haha...i didn't recognize anyone, but I think the "someone from the forum" was me...my email is the same Pretty funny, but I'm sure the grad coordinator is getting REEMED!!!!! Unprofessional, yes. Do I really care that everyone who got rejected knows I was too? Not a bit. Sucks to get rejected by ann swindler--I like her.
neutiquamerro Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 that's a terrible way to receive a decision! i really hope other schools notify applicants properly!
waitinginohio Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Haha...i didn't recognize anyone, but I think the "someone from the forum" was me...my email is the same haha, yeah, it was you, but I didn't want to "out" your rejection. I also don't really mind, so long as someone doesn't sell our e-mails to an ad/spam company. Mostly I'm just shocked that such a highly ranked program would be so unprofessional.
ewurgler Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 Thanks waiting. Who needs berkeley anyway! I want to live in a swing state!
