The results page shows that some have been asked to do a phone interview about their "aims, goals, and interests." What does it even mean? Have they been not clear about their aims, goals, and interests in their statements?

(I didn't apply there, but I wanted to know what's going on in one of these things.)

I was the first one. I wondered about the clarity of my statement of purpose as well. I assume these types of interviews are designed to ensure that the applicant is actually a coherent person whose application wasn't put together for them by their advisor, or something of the sort (at least I hope that's all it is). Never done one of these before. I'm interested to see how it goes.

Do you guys feel your statements were general or focused? Did you describe your aims, goals, and interests in your statements?

I got the invitation as well and am very much looking forward to the interview. My SoP was more a little of my research background and interests and a base idea of how I feel I would fit into Indiana sociology. With this approach the 500 word SoP makes sense in as much that they use interviews to allow the strongest canddiates to expound on their interests.

I got an email for a phone interview too. It mentioned the same thing about goals/interests/aims. My SOP contained my general areas of interest as I do not have any specific research proposal in mind. I hope it goes well and we hear some good news soon. Good luck everyone!

Everyone I know who "interviewed" the last 2 years on here, myself included, was accepted to Indiana a week later. The "interview" literally consisted of the DGS talking for like 40 minutes, and myself talking for maybe 5 minutes. They didn't have a recruitment day, so the phone interview was basically the DGS telling you everything about the program and allowing for you to ask questions and so forth. It is definitely nothing to worry about. Good luck!

That's very auspicious. I'm still getting ready to get grilled nonetheless. Can't be too prepared right? :)

Most of the private school will pay you to fly and visit... or at least give you some money to help cover the cost

UT-Austin will cover up to $200 in travel expenses, not sure on any of the other ones.

So, I just had my interview with the DGS...She was really sweet and although I was fully expecting to be interrogated, it ended up being very informal and casual. To those who still have the phone interview looming on the horizon-honestly don't sweat it! It was a great process and was really informative; barilicious was absolutely on the mark with his description of the interview.

Good luck to everyone!

Just had my interview as well. DGS was great and like newsociologist said, conversation was really casual. Told that final decisions would be made by the end of this week/early next week.

Well, she did say by the end of this week or early next week. I can't wait to hear back though. I feel pretty optimistic about it.

hopefully this means that when we do hear, if it's an acceptance we'll also be able to get funding details at the same time as well. If it's a rejection on the other hand.......

That said, it seemed to me like interviews were more of a vetting process to make sure all nothing was seriously out of whack with the applicant. I want to say that most (if not all), interviewees will be accepted.

I hope I don't have to eat my words on this one. That will hurt.

I keep vascillating between common sense and panic; sometimes I feel that Indiana will almost certainly extend offers to all interviewees (barring a meltdown during the interview), but the idea that interviewees will be culled based on their performance sets in. Its all so exhausting!

I am seriously in suspense-I was really hoping that today would be the day :-/

Looking at the results from previous couple of years, acceptances from Indiana went out in the weekend after interviews, mainly on Saturday. :o

I was right. Just got accepted. Email from DGS; offer includes tuition, health, stipend.

It's my first acceptance and I'm very excited!
