current grad at HGSE... got questions?

I relied heavily on info from gradcafe last year, and thought I'd return the favor! I'm in the EdD at HGSE. I was also admitted to Stanford, Berkeley, and Madison. Let me know if I can be of help.

You are awesome! I really appreciate what you are doing.

This might seem like a silly question, but I've applied to both HGSE and SUSE. Will professors contact for phone interviews like all the other schools? Or will we just find out results when they come out? Because I couldn't find any past posts of phone interviews with professors for these schools on gradcafe's results search.

Appreciate any help or info. Thanks!

First, the caveat I probably should have included at the top of the thread-- I'm just speaking from my experience, and obviously it's totally totally different for everyone.

hitomimay - I had a SUSE prof interview me over the phone. She didn't indicate whether she would be my advisor or not if admitted, but later the same prof called me back, made the offer, and said she would indeed be my advisor. HGSE did not do a phone interview. They called me to congratulate me and that was it. SUSE admitted me rather early (end of January-ish) while HGSE admitted me toward the end of February (I was trying to resign myself to rejection at that point and was pleasantly surprised). One thing to keep in mind is that HGSE is less compartmentalized than other schools-- the whole faculty gets together to consult on building the cohort, whereas other places do things in more of a piecemeal fashion (or so I understand).

keepswimming - HGSE offered me (a lot) more money and my partner had a job offer in Boston, so it was no question. But even before I got into HGSE, I was on the fence about SUSE because I don't love the area and because I didn't feel so strongly about my advisor-- seemed like an awesome person, but perhaps not the best fit for me. I was considering Berkeley instead, even though they were entering me for campus-wide fellowships and thus I was possibly not going to have much money, but they were awesome people, seemed like a better fit, and I love the bay. As I'm sure you know, you have to decide what factors are most important to you. Is there something you're comparing between HGSE and SUSE?

I do, sorry! I'll message you, and I'm happy to answer general questions about any of the concentrations, as I have friends in all of them.

Hello,

I'm currently a senior in college, and I applied to Harvard's IEP, Stanford's IEAPA, and Columbia.

I know you're not in the Masters Program, but I was wondering if you needed professional work experience in order to get into programs like the ones I have mentoined above.

I do have experiences that I have accumulated during my undergraduate years; however, I don't have any full-time work experience.

Is there affordable parking? The cost is so high, and I think I could cut down living costs a lot by living a solid drive away from campus. But, does driving make any sense?

I'm actually copying this from another thread because I couldn't bear the idea of typing the whole thing again! I know you're not a Masters student, but I realllllyyy wanted your opinion on the whole thing!

Hey everybody!

I'm a prospective MEd student from India. Completely new here, so will start of with my list!

Applied: Harvard (IEP), Penn (IEDP), Stanford (ICE), NYU (IEDP), Lynch (Applied Developmental Psychology)

Accepted: Lynch, Penn

Rejected: None so far

My first option is Penn, partly because of the exposure it'll have to UNESCO now that a chair has been established at IEDP, their international internships and their UNESCO Fellowship for students from developing countries. I also got a scholarship worth 10000 USD. Also, the fact that its an Ivy doesn't hurt. But the lure of Harvard is ever present! I don't know if I should wait or just go ahead and accept my offer from Penn! For international students, there's the additional long-ish process of getting an I-20 and a F-1 visa, so the sooner you start, the better. To wait or not to wait - its just such a conundrum!

Also, I want to move on to a PhD immediately after the completion of my degree, so I'm looking into that too and the sooner I have some clarity about where I'm headed, the better for preliminary PhD research. I have 2 years of experience in education (and overall) and a previous Masters (in Journalism though). What do you think my chances for getting accepted to a good university for a PhD would be? Right after my Masters, that is?

Thank you so much for volunteering to answer questions!

I am a current teacher but eventually want to apply for an Ed.D. Right now, I am looking for things to do over the summer to beef up my resume. I applied to two professional development programs at the HGSE and was accepted to both. I am trying to decide if I should go, but they are pricey...

Are they worth it? Or not?

Thanks in advance!

Hi

Is it hard to "get into" the classes that you want (M. ED).? Concerned that the Fall course catolog doesn't come out until June/July...and it doesn't seem that you can register for classes until late August. Do you tend to get the courses you want?

Thanks.
