cskvchang Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Hi, all. I got an offer for a master's program at a decent university. They ask me to make my decision and submit a deposit by March 1st. But I am pretty sure that all my other schools will respond in late March or early April. And it is unlikely that they will give me an extension for submitting my deposit. I am thinking that I first submit the deposit by the deadline and wait for other schools. If there is a better school that accepts me, I will just go to the new school. If no one else accepts me, I will attend this school. I was wondering whether there will be a severe consequence if I submit my deposit and later choose to attend another school. Thanks! cskvchang 1
juilletmercredi Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Why do you say that it is unlikely they will give you an extension? You never know until you ask. You also don't know when your other schools will respond. I think you should wait until around mid-February, and if you still haven't heard back from the other schools, call your acceptance and ask if it is possible for you to get an extension on your decision deadline because you are still waiting to hear back from other schools. However, the only "severe consequence" that you'll get from doing that is losing your deposit. rising_star 1
Karen Cabana Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I agree with Juilletmercredi cskvchang! Why don't you try it first? You'll never know 'til you get there. That's the time that you have to decide then. Best luck!
TheLadyT Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 What do you mean by deposit? There is still much I am not understanding about the PhD process...

cskvchang Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 What do you mean by deposit? There is still much I am not understanding about the PhD process... I got into a master's program. They ask me to pay a deposit to secure a seat for enrollment.
ktel Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 I was not asked to pay a deposit until soon before the program was due to start. However for my undergrad a deposit was required. I don't know how common deposits are for grad school
cskvchang Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 Oh! Is this common? I am not sure whether it's common, but usually graduate schools ask admitted students to reply by a certain date. Hope this helps.
