migrationdude Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I am, though I am not too excited about it (mainly because of the location).
slothy Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Yes, do you have any news? Haven't seen anything on the results page yet, figured they'd be notifying next week.
doctoraldude Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 nopes - no news at all. I guess they're waiting for the stimulus package to go through (a completely unsubstantiated guess at that ! )
limeinthecoconut Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 nopes - no news at all. I guess they're waiting for the stimulus package to go through (a completely unsubstantiated guess at that ! ) Hmm, my source from another department in Cornell says that basically, departments in Cornell have been told to cut their budgets across the board. One of the things that have been affected rather badly is the graduate program. Hence, some departments are holding back admission decisions, until they get more news about the economic situation.
international Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 oh man, that's really bad news... do you think international applicants will be more affected by that in privet universities as well?
limeinthecoconut Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 I have no idea, but I am hoping not (I'm international, too). From what I understand, the reason why UC schools limit international admissions is because international students can't establish residency in California, making funding them more expensive than domestic students. As long as there isn't such a rule in other states, I don't think there's an international student costs more than an out-of-state student. BUT, I am also guessing that there's some policy governing how many international students vs. how many domestic students. In my friend's cohort, it was half-half.
Sociologist Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Have you heard anything about Cornell? This is my last US shot... although I'm not very confident about my prospects. Anyway, let us know if you were contacted by Cornell.

One of the things that have been affected rather badly is the graduate program. Hence, some departments are holding back admission decisions, until they get more news about the economic situation. Well, that might be true, but as long as the results section of this site is reliable (I never entirely believe in self-declared non-audited info, sorry), a lot of Cornell departments, social sciences and humanities included, have already notified their applicants.
doctoraldude Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 a lot of Cornell departments, social sciences and humanities included, have already notified their applicants. cant remember seeing any cornell soc results yet on the results page though ... (note: hopeless optimist here :? )
Sociologist Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Ok, Doctoraldude, let's remain cheerful and optimistic about it. And in order to keep this thread alive while we wait for an uncertain decision, I will ask you and others: does anyone ever went to Ithaca? I read that someone questioned the location and I'd like to develop the subject. Considering for a moment the small possibility of getting admitted, I would like to know a little more about the city and the university as well. You see...I'm not American, I've always lived in huge urban centers (the smallest was London, not the Canadian, but the British one ) and I'm not sure about living in a tiny newyorker town. And what about the university and the department? I know it is pretty good in my subfield (economic sociology) but I don't want to be a specialist jerk. I value a lot the good ol' social theory and consider it to be essential to any substantial research. I'm also a little afraid of any kind of sociological etnocentrism (let's admit that American sociologists and universities in general tend to ignore what was or is being produced overseas). The presence of Swedberg was essential to my decision of applying there (both for his European roots and his treatment of classical social theory) but what about others?

Sociologist Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I'm not familiar about the department itself, but there is a thread about Ithaca in another forum. viewtopic.php?f=27&t=196 Thanks, Samoth! The opinions are quite divided... it semmed ackward to me that many students define Ithaca as being the last shelter for hippies and simultaneously describe the absence of serious cultural activities. I can remember of the thrilling cultural production started by hippies in the 60s... now what? They turned even more greener and think that oil on canvas or music are not environmentally friendly?
doctoraldude Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 from what i have heard, there's a hippie crowd but mostly from previous generations. As for specialization - that's precisely why i applied the weather is definitely cooold ... as for culture - maybe you can check out the link given btw, first cornell soc result posted on GC (its not me ) to the cornell poster: was there an interview ? (pm me plz if you dont want to post ...)
Sociologist Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Well, I always thought that old hippies were culturally active... Anyway, is it real the result posted? Are they really writing, but not for me?
slothy Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Just accepted by Cornell. They emailed me about two hours ago while I was in class. Very strong funding offer - 21.5k for 5 yrs (2 w/o TA/RA commitments) plus around 4.5k for 4 summers. Can't wait to visit!
Tritonetelephone Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Just accepted by Cornell. They emailed me about two hours ago while I was in class. Very strong funding offer - 21.5k for 5 yrs (2 w/o TA/RA commitments) plus around 4.5k for 4 summers. Can't wait to visit! Daaaaaamn! That is a nice funding package. Congrats, Slothy!
Sociologist Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Hey, congrats Slothy! Are you an American or foreign citizen (if you don't mind to tell us...)? Did the e-mail included any details about the cohort size of admitted students this year? I know this is very unlikely, but I'm very anxious right now... I can't help dreaming about an incoming message right now... And I wouldn't mind if they offer me a less generous package...
slothy Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I'm American. No word on cohort size or anything like that, unfortunately. It didn't seem to be a mass email though. Good luck!
Sociologist Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Thanks anyway, Slothy. And once again, congrats! Considering the GC results representative enough and neglecting any rate of undernotification (many people might have better things to do right now), we should think they are being really personal about these admissions... Not many admissions yet...
Sociologist Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Hey guys... anyone else has heard from Cornell? This is strange... Either the accepted, besides Slothy and an international fellow (who I'm not sure if is real), don't like GC, or they are very slowly notifying their applicants. Well, I guess it's too soon to send them an email and receive a "Sorry, you're not in the short list"...
juturnas Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 hi sociologist i'm the international who posted the acceptance from cornell. so it's real:) I don't know how many people they have notified but the acceptance email was certainly an individual one.
slothy Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 I really don't know... they're a small department (only 50 grad students!) probably taking a smaller than usual cohort. Kind of suprised that I'm getting early notification from them (and UNC) despite silence from 5 of my top programs. If anyone else here gets in I'd like to know!
Sociologist Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Juturnas, sorry for questioning your post. Slothy, do you have any idea how long Swedberg and Berezin will stay in Florence? It's nicer than Ithaca and they have a fabulous stipend (not sure if it will cover the cost of living in Firenze, though).
frogskin Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Are you that are accepted, accepted into Sociology or the Development Sociology program?
