andsoitgoes161 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I'm just a few letters ahead of you, so I'll post if/when I find out. I'm also a Rhetoric hopeful and I thought maybe the department was just lagging, but given that impending got a rejection today and was also a rhet person, I've given up on that lambent hope.
Rupert Pupkin Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I still haven't heard. I'm assuming it's a matter of time before I get my rejection. FWIW, I'm at the end of the alphabet.
antecedent Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Yeah I'm L, so the alphabet theory may be correct, but I'm also not rhet/comp, so who knows!
RoundandRoundAgain Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I'm M and I haven't heard anything yet.
WendyMoira Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I'm sorry, antecedent. I'm still waiting on so many schools but lots are mplicit rejections, so it's looking like Austin is it for me. I was hoping to see you all there.
jywayne Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I got the axe today. 5 down (4 officially), 1 waitlist that I'm hoping for, and 3 more to go. Staying upbeat and focused is hard these days.
ophelia9 Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 (edited) Hey everyone - I know there was an earlier conversation about funding (and perhaps teaching obligations?) somewhere in this thread, so sorry if this is a repeat question. UT seems to require a LOT of teaching, much more than most of the private universities I've seen. In some ways that seems like a plus to me, or at least not a negative, as I'm excited to teach and want to gain as much experience as possible. But I do worry about balancing coursework and eventually dissertation-writing with that kind of schedule. Does anyone else have experience TA-ing in the first few years, whether at UT specifically or in a similar context? How much should this factor into a final decision? EDIT: Sorry, ahh, I don't mean to sound at all insensitive by posting right after people have received bad news. I was just curious to see what others think about this. Probably because they have seventy bajillion undergrads and need the manpower. The good thing is that the TA/AI responsibilities are uniform, so instructors and advisors are, I imagine, used to accomodating such a schedule. I'm teaching at UNC now and it's such a blast. I think it would be very exciting to teach in the first year.

My last name starts with a Y, so I'm usually last in the chopping block for most things.

I'm consistently surprised by the number of people who complain about having to teach; if there's one lesson that everyone seems to draw from the recent brutal job markets, it's that you have to demonstrate experience in and enthusiasm for teaching.
HaruNoKaze Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Just got my rejection email from Wayne Lesser. It's all on you, Andsoitgoes!!! I'm still rooting for you!

RoundandRoundAgain Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Are they maybe doing it by field now instead of alphabet?
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I'm sorry Antecedant and HaruNoKaze, I was really pulling for you guys... I don't know about your other offers HaruNoKaze, but I see you got into UW Madison Antecedant! Getting rejected from them was the worst feeling ever-- it is a lovely school in a wonderful city and it is so cheap to live there! It doesn't seem like a real place, I swear.

Ooh are you familar with the department/program/town? I'm really torn between my two offers: two great Masters programs that are totally unfunded. I think I'm going to contact the finaid office and see if they can help me out at all cause I really want to go, but with out of state tuition it doesn't matter HOW cheap the cost of living is, I'll still be taking out loans
HaruNoKaze Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 i also applied to UT's philosophy program, but I'm not sure I'll get in. I'm hoping for it, but I thought I had a better chance at Rhet than Phil. UT is a wonderful place, and they have great programs, but are sooo competitive!!! Gonna keep checking for updates on Andsoitgoes!
andsoitgoes161 Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 HaruNoKaze I'm so sorry I really hope you make it into the philosophy program...I also considered applying to it, but knew I would just be frivolously throwing money away in paying the app fee. I can't believe I haven't heard anything from UT yet...I swear I think it's because they lost my file, or something goofy like that is going on. I've been flat out rejected from four schools far, FAR less prestigious that Texas, so I'm honestly not holding my breath.

I think I'm going to contact the finaid office and see if they can help me out at all cause I really want to go, but with out of state tuition it doesn't matter HOW cheap the cost of living is, I'll still be taking out loans I know the feeling, I already have loans from undergrad with killer interest rates and am wondering if I should take out more... But at this point I'm not even in anywhere so I try not to think about it, yet it haunts me when I try to sleep at night... I'm more familiar with the Madison area than the school itself. My boyfriend is in the Chemistry program there, and I've visited him a few times. The city's small, but it's got a lot going on. Public transportation is great, and students get an unlimited bus pass as part of the tuition costs. Cost of living is pretty low in regards to rent, food, and gas. Everytime we went grocery shopping, I was amazed by how affordable everything is! There's a lot of free/cheap things to do for fun in the area too... There's a ton of parks and bike paths, a free botanical gardens and zoo. Actually, if I don't get into grad school this round, I'm pretty certain I'm going to relocate to Madison and make some money while I try to figure out what the hell I'm doing!
Rupert Pupkin Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I still haven't heard anything. How many of us are there?

I was waitlisted there and aside from one Ivy, UTA is the highest ranking school I applied to. All of my rejections from from lower ranked programs. This process makes no sense whatsoever. I think monkeys throwing dice around determines who gets in and who doesn't.
HaruNoKaze Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I still haven't heard anything. How many of us are there? you, galoup, and andsoitgoes are the only ones left i think...
portlandfioretti Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I'm still waiting too. British Romanticism is my speciality.
