Refresh refresh Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 To the people who have been accepted or waitlisted for comp lit: First, congrats!! Second, how were you informed? Was it a generic email to check your status, or was it a personalized email? aka, is it time for me to give up hope...
antecedent Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Yeah Marlowe! So stoked for you! marlowe 1
marlowe Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 (edited) Yeah Marlowe! So stoked for you! Thanks so much, antecedant. As someone that struck out completely last year, the second year makes all the difference. Fit is so unbelievably important, and this board really demonstrates that, I think. Edit to add: I am in Literature, yes. (Darn duke confusing my notions of English, Lit, Comp, etc.) Edited February 16, 2012 by marlowe

Glad to see things worked out for you this time around. As you said, fit IS king. What's your specialty, if you don't mind my asking?
Ryzhaya Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 To the people who have been accepted or waitlisted for comp lit: how were you informed? I received an email directly from Cesar Salgado informing me that I had been placed on a "short waitlist" (although it looks like at least two other folks were as well - - I wonder just how "short" we're talking here??). I'm pleased to have been considered eligible even if i don't end up attending. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted, and I hope everyone hears from them soon!
hazelbite Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I GOT IN I GOT IN I GOT IN. I AM SO HAPPY. My first feedback! This week was so sad with 3 implicit rejections, then a few days later... le joy. MARGARITA TIME, Y'ALL. woolferine and bdon19 2
bdon19 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 For all the acceptees, are you planning on going to the visit weekend? I've been to the campus before (it's the bomb), but not when classes were in session, so I'm pretty sure I'll be attending. It'd be lovely to meet some of you! marlowe 1
MyshkinLit Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 i wasn't aware there was a visit weekend. i'm still very nervous about this acceptance because they haven't given me any information on funding! has anyone else received such information? i would love to attend this program (comp lit) but i need the fellowship. hope everyone is well.
marlowe Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Oh, most definitely. It is too bad that the weekend doesn't fall until early April, but it doesn't look like they had much choice. Can't wait.
bdon19 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I'm in English, so maybe the acceptance info is different. My e-mail detailed funding info as well as info about the visit weekend. I'm guessing comp lit must just do it differently?
hazelbite Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Bdon and Marlowe, I'm definitely going! So excited! And Myshkinlit, my email detailed their full funding and tuition remission and explained options for additional funding. It also linked me to a page to apply for a summer and relocation fellowship.
Ryzhaya Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 MyshkinLit, don't let these English folks freak you out - I'm sure Comp Lit is just set up differently. I'd recommend just sending them an email and asking when they expect funding decisions to be made. I emailed this question to the program to which I've been accepted, along with a few other questions about the program and a request to be put in touch with some current graduate students, and they responded promptly and helpfully.
TripWillis Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I just got accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FLIPPING OUT! Austin was one of my top choices!!!!!!!!! P.S. My area is plain ol' English lit. Studying the 18th-century, most specifically the novel. Go bdon!!! Such a great school. You now have two wonderful choices. bdon19 1
hedgerows Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Congrats bdon! Hands in the air for 18th centuryists!

Thanks! I did that yesterday but haven't heard back yet. Last I heard, he (graduate director) said that the grad coordinator would be in touch to set up a phone meeting. I hate how vague they are with details. I think they're going to ask me "how much" I really want to attend Austin BEFORE they offer funding. I think it's my number one choice. Other options are WashU and Rutgers. Which do you think is the best? They're all SO TEMPTING!!! This is a very exciting year... good luck to everyone.
MyshkinLit Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 By the way, even though, as someone already pointed out, my user name references Russian Lit, it is not my field. I just love it, but it isn't what I'm planning to study. + I don't speak Russian; I have only read it in translation. BUT In another lifetime, I speak Russian, I'm sure of it.

RoundandRoundAgain Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I admire the UT Austin English department for posting this announcement: "As of February 15, 2012, we have made our first round admission offers for the Ph.D. program in English. Over the next week, we will be re-reviewing our applicant pool to compile a wait list. Final admission decisions will be made by Friday, February 24, 2012." I'm disappointed but pleased that they're so forthright about where they are in the process. Good luck to the rest of us waiting. JeremiahParadise 1
impending Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Rats! Good to actually know, though. I was going nuts over here not knowing whether offers had been made for rhetoric too.

I guess it means they're deciding whether or not to waitlist us. Oh well, good to know.
marlowe Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Good for them. I have had nothing but straightforward and helpful interactions with the department at UT. People really do care about these things too, I think.
WendyMoira Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Congrats to my fellow admits. I may have been the one you saw post an admit for English. Found out with an email from the DGS this afternoon--lots of funding info. I'm not sure how good the funding package is, though. Health insurance is regular employee insurance, which is nice, but the nine-month stipend of $13k might not compete...thoughts? What's everyone's specialty? I'm probably going to go to the event in April. The school is great, and probably one of the only ones that will think I'll "fit." Not sure how much I want to move to Texas... But the idea of studying with some of their people is so gorgeous.

But the idea of studying with some of their people is so gorgeous. A friend of mine from undergrad is at UT Law now, and his girlfriend is an English PhD there. According to him, all of the English PhD students live pretty comfortably, since Austin has such a low cost of living. And re: the 95% tuition waver--apparently that comes out to paying about $200 a semester.
