anonyouknow Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I got an email this morning from one of my schools stating I was recommended for admission to the program, with official written acceptance pending committee approval and expected to be sent the second week of March. The email, though sent to my email address and Cced to my POI (who I have very recently spoken with regarding my application, though she didn't say anything about offering a spot at the time), was addressed to a different name. What are the chances this recommendation was sent to the wrong person? I've emailed back politely asking for confirmation the message was sent to the proper person, but due to the time difference (of course I received the email first thing in the morning my time, directly after work hours at the school) I won't have an answer for another full day and may just worry myself to death in the meantime. I would almost certainly accept an offer from this school, as it is one of my top choices, which makes the wait even more stressful.
ktel Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 That's terrible! I think the fact that your POI was cc-ed makes the case stronger that the e-mail was meant for you. It's quite obvious that they just copy and paste the same message for all students, so perhaps they forgot to change the name. But you will obviously (and unfortunately) have to wait.
abandoned Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Well - that sucks. But there's nothing you can do now but watch the clock.
GradHooting Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 If they correct their stance and say it was a rejection, just send them a counter-rejection letter, saying that you must stick with their first decision, and agree to their terms of calling you the new name they made for you But, really, that's gotta be a roller coaster of emotions right there. That's what I'm hoping as well, it was definitely a template email and could have just been a small error on the part of the sender, and I'm hoping if it was for the wrong person my POI would have noticed and corrected the error asap, but it's a terrible feeling Darn this time difference!

Haha, that was one of my first thoughts. Perhaps if I just go get a name change everything will match up again and then there's no excuse Fortunately the name was the same gender and I won't have to go around as a Tom or Robert. I'll be counting down the hours until business hours begin! anonyouknow 1
applyingfromtexas Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 whoa! sorry that happened to you! i bet they forgot to change the name when copying the message. good luck!
Tabz Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Yes, hopefully it was just a copy/paste error!
abc123xtc Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 So what is the end result of this story? LawlQuals and akyl 2
CrayolaBee Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I had that happen to me with an internship last year - admission letter with the wrong name on it. In my case, they really HAD meant to send it to another person. (So embarrassing and demoralizing...) But the emailer checked it out and found that I was admitted too, and she sent my admission email shortly after. (I didn't have a POI, though.) I hope you get a positive answer soon.
anonyouknow Posted February 18, 2012 Author Posted February 18, 2012 UPDATE: I heard back from the graduate secratary this morning and the email was meant for me!! She apologized for the confusion and assured me it was a copy/paste error but definitely not for anyone else Great start to the weekend! go3187, habanero and alicejcw 3
