I take it you're an aspiring medievalist as well - if so, GO UCONN! That would be THE best fit for me, although I probably wouldn't be thrilled about living in Storrs.

Yes, that I am. I would be thrilled with UCONN. However, Rochester is my top. I have a strong interest in medievalism and the temporal movement between the Middle Ages and representations in popular culture. It's a little unorthodox, but quite fun! What areas are you interested in, Isidore?

The unfortunate thing about these boards is that now that I have this information (and, oops, an MA), I'm going to be fixated on my inbox until I get the rejection I've resigned myself to. I have papers to grade, but multi-tasking is just not my bag.

ROCHESTER... swoon. Another place I would have applied to if I thought my SO could commute to MA twice a week... Good luck to you!

I've only completed my BA thus far, so I'm sure my interests will evolve, but right now I'm pretty preoccupied with medieval mysticism and the phenomenology of perception (I minored in philosophy) - mainly pertaining to late medieval devotional writers. I also have a soft spot for Anglo Saxon poetry (spent a semester translating Beowulf - it changed my life!) Your area sounds quite interesting! I always wished my UG English department would have offered a course in Tolkien...

I got accepted! I can't believe it!

Their funding is a first year fellowship with no teaching responsibilities, then five years guaranteed teaching 1/1. I can't believe it. It feels so good to have two acceptances!

Sorry, I know a lot of people in this thread got rejected today :( I'm just so excited!

WOO! Way to go SP! So, knee-jerk reaction: Amherst or BU?

BU as of right now, because the funding is so much better. Plus it would awesome to live in Boston :)

I'm going to visit both and see how they match up. My family lives in Cambridge so it won't be tough visiting either program.

Of course, I'll be joining you at Harvard, once we hear from them ;)

And thanks for all the support! There's a bunch of books on display in my library about African-American lit, because of February, and I think of you every time I pass by them.

Stately - CONGRATS! Sounds like a great offer - how exciting!

Thanks Isidore!

Looking forward to seeing both of you at Harvard.

+++ energy (it worked for me today!)

I still haven't heard anything from BU. Couldn't they have just rejected me at the same time as all the other rejections, instead of leaving me hanging on this tattered string of folorn hope?

Congrats, Stately! Out of curiosity, how many people that got into BU have an MA?

I don't have an MA. I think they may have only taken one person who already had an MA, but I don't know if they even took that. I know they only took like 5-6 PhD students, and then another 4-6 MA students

You should feel really awesome right now.

I really do, Trip. Thanks :)

And thanks to everyone for all the support. Not just for me, right now, but for everyone, generally. I really do feel like there's a legit community of people on here who really care about one another. It makes me really excited to get to know everyone professionally

I'm pulling for all of you! Here's to good news for everyone! :D

Why would they want people who only have a Bachelor's? Honestly, when I told the chair of my department (the one I teach for) he was flabbergasted. I have 5 years of college teaching experience, awards, etc...just weird. Oh well, bit of a vent I guess.

From what I understand they do take 1 MA student per year... The problem is that they only admit 5-6 PhD students. They don't want to take all students who have already completed a MA program, which is actually pretty typical of most programs. Lots of department website mention that they only take a handful of students who already have a MA.

To be honest, I'm not sure it makes that much sense. If their hope is to fund students whom they won't have to worry about, it seems to make more sense to take grad-tested students.

On the other hand, they probably don't want to get billed as a program that only accepts MA students. Imagine how many people (like myself) who wouldn't apply, with no MA in hand, if they knew the wouldn't be accepted. Plus I can imagine they want to work with at least some students the whole way through.

So my thinking is that it's not so much that they frown on MA students, it's just that their incoming cohort is so small, they really only have room for 1 (if that) MA student.

It's weird how nonchalant most of us are about not getting this one. Granted, we both have acceptances in hand. But to be honest, this was never one of my top choices. I'm trying to remember why I applied in the first place. Should've sent an app to UNC Chapel Hill or Columbia instead.

Yes, Trip, you should have! Then we could go to UNC together! (Not that I've decided or anything, but...I really, really like UNC right now...) B)

Ah, there we go... did everyone else get invited to the whole MA thing? Not that I could afford 41,000 dollars (!!) anyway, but it would be nice to know whether I should feel a little bit good about myself or if I just received the same thing as every other rejected scholar. ;P

Got my official rejection this morning, but they are interested in offering me a position in their unfunded MA program. I'm still waiting on one possible program, though I have very little hope of an acceptance, and so I'm actually considering accepting their offer. Does anyone know how that works as far as loans? I certainly do not have $41,000 to shell out. Also, has anyone had a similar experience? Is it worth it to go for my MA and hopefully have more clout in my PhD apps for next year? I could really use some advice.

Adam-

I got an email from the super nice DGS, who said that they have accepted under 10 people for the unfunded Masters. So, feel good about yourself! I am considering it a glimmer of hope in this very stressful process.

Whoa, so I was one of the ten offered the chance to spend $41,000? Consider me honored.

From what I have learned from this forum, it is somewhat possible to a) aggressively apply for scholarships to make that number go down and B) actually gain something from an unfunded masters. But I agree, 41K is going to hurt like a (insert expletive).
